  • Simon B's gotta a new motor!

3wks ago I travelled down from Aberdeen, to Warrington & collected this beast.

I had a bonus for seeing the Brent Charlie out, last Nov. Although, I didn't receive it until March. Very annoyed about that, when others received it in Nov's pay.

Anyway, its been burning a hole in my pocket since Oct & been looking for the car of my dreams, rather than waiting until my retirement in 12/25.

Main candidate was an Aston, specifically a DB9. Didn't really fancy the Vantage & all other models way too much. Although, I could have bought one for cash, worries of additional costs of parts & labour at an independent, could be ruinous & I don't have faith in long warranties, as most items can be dismissed as wear & tear on an older car. The real stumbling block was no garage & no where to store it. Professional storage with trickle charging £2,500 ,p.a, which I couldn't justify.

So I settled for the beast. An XK8 4.2 V8 6 speed 2004, in Ebony, with warm charcoal leather, 65,000miles. The garage had replaced the headliner, battery, full service, Inc replacement brake fluid. Kept it indoors, on trickle charge. Interior perfect. Has triple dials, with chrome rims. Earlier models are without the roses & later had GPS but so out dated no one seems to use it. A previous private sale car I looked at had beige leather (I really wanted black) & GPS. He said when he bought another, he'd go for the chrome dials. He also had modified stage 1&2 exhaust, which did sound amazing.

It's particularly nice to have the J gate back, which I had in my X Sovereign. I find it more engaging than the sport button.

Keeping the red XF as a fishing car!

I've always loved the look of these, reminds me of playing Gran Turismo about 20 years ago. Will definitely go down as a classic.

You're much braver than me though, I don't think I could ever bring myself to trust a 20 year old Jag!

Congratulations and may you have many happy miles in it. Great philosophy, don't wait till you're too old to enjoy it!

Well I consider it a 'classic car', even though technically I think that's 25yrs+. But with any aged car, there's always something that needs attention & parts & labour if you can't do it yourself, are always going to mount. However, as a second car it's not such a problem. I was mainly worried that some yobbo from the estate (we live on an ex- council estate, half of the houses are now in private hands, flats across the road are still council. The Cops are down at least weekly dealing with minor domestics & the couple of regular drug pushers. Not a sink estate by any means & although locals from the rest of town might be wary, when you mention your address, in the 2yrs we have been here, we have never had a single problem. But there's a school at the end of the road so 200 kids go past every day so wondered if one of them might mark the car. But I never got any damage to my other two Jag's & as they were both 10yrs+, they weren't worth more than other cars in the street.

So I didn't have to wait long for the first problem. By the time I arrived from Aberdeen, I only got time to deal with the paperwork & take ownership, not a full test drive (although I had a quick drive when I first saw the car 3 wks before). So I said, we'll consider the first hour of drive home to be the test drive & I'll let you know if there's any problem. It came with a 56 day warranty & a chance to extend to a year for £1,000. He was confident they'd be no problem.

I filled with Shell 98 at the local garage & managed to get on the motorway, in that very cautious way you drive a new car. Within 10mins the rain started, I put on the wipers. Within 10mins the drivers side (of course ) only covered half the window & then stopped! I had to leave the motorway & pulled over into a layby on a dual carriageway & put the hazard lights on. I emailed the problem so it was recorded. I said I'd be getting my Independant Jag garage to fix it (the warranty was for any VAT registered garage) & he just replied, let me know the cost). I would have returned to the garage & returned it in the morning, if I didn't have an operation booked in for the next day & had to get home not to miss it.

The rain stopped, I wiped the screen & tried to switch the hazard lights off. Ha! The button was stuck in the depressed position. I imediatley Googled it on the Pistonheads site & low & behold, it's a common problem. Suggestion was to remove the cover with credit cards & pop out. I wondered if I could just pop out the button with credit cards, Yes, that worked & I was able to proceed. Now it was dark & that helped, following the lights in front but lorries coming from the opposite side sprayed the screen, which I couldn't clear. I stopped several times & once rested at a pub.

Once I got to Oxford there hadn't been any rain for an hour so I went back on the motorway. A journey that should have taken 4.5hrs took 7.5hrs!

My Independant has me booked in for the 19/04 to check the problem, they think it's come of the rail, rather than motor failure but I still haven't got an agreement yet, the selling garage will cover the costs. to my mind, under the Consumers act, they certainly should as you can't drive a car in the rain without working wipers & therefore it wasn't road worthy, even though it had just passed an MOT. I didn't extend the warranty because when I read the small print, what was covered could mostly be dismissed as wear & tear, especially on a 20yo car. And thought it better to put the grand towards any problems that actually arise & avoid arguing about any claims.

One problem that I was able to solve was the passenger widow drops on opening the door but wasn't closing on locking the doors. This happens after disconnecting & fitting a new battery. I found on Youtube that if you press down & hold for 5 seconds & raise it & hold for 5 seconds, it resets, this did work.

Only other problem of note is that the shitehawks do seem to favour black, clean cars!

Well I could have bought a few boxes of the new Cohiba but at least Jag's are only damaging my wealth!

Nice car Simon Bolivar, congratulations! Got to expect a few issues with older cars but hopefully nothing to troublesome.
Love the interior choice. same as I had in my 2001 XJ Sport.

Have come close to buying one of these a couple of times, but no longer do the mileage I did for business before, so can't justify it; but would if that changes...
Has the same 'birds eye walnut' facia i had on my Jaguar Racing Green/cream leather S-Type that I loved, and no dpubt is as comfotable. The 4.2 is the engine to go for; just means you need to fit the radar device to warn you you're passing a filing station without stopping! Enjoy!

Call me old fashioned but I do like some buttons on my dash over the modern touch screen panels. Lovely motor.

Nice car, welcome to the late mid-life crisis brigade. Since hitting my mid 50's nearly over 8 years ago I've had an M4 now has an Audi RS5. Currently evaluating what to get next as I need to change the car at the end of the year.

Enjoy. They are a lot of fun.
