  • Let's talk about the law...

...or rather the lobbyists and politicians who push for them. Over the years working in the medical field, I've always known most of my peers become a little deranged on public health policies and disease prevention. It becomes a major obsession for many, particularly with the big three; tobacco, alcohol, and junk food. Much of the time you'll hear some wildly hyperbolic claims not backed by any scientific or medical research (e.g. "there's so safe limit of alcohol consumption" being a recent claim, and one mirrored by the PM regarding tobacco - a false claim).
But all proposals thought up become increasingly bizarre and so ill thought through that I believe they might just be utterly unhinged. To demonstrate, here's a list of proposals from a government backed report into making England "smoke-free" by 2030 - although, of course, smoking won't be criminalised so how this is to be achieved in just over 6 years is anyone's guess.58870097-12593527-Last_year_a_spokesman_for_the_Department_of_Health_said_that_tac-a-14_1696437579749.jpgYes, you read that correctly - an episode of Friends with Richard enjoying a cigar woulf have the same rating as hardcore pornography or the most violent of horror films. Despite having a government with the worst economic literacy in decades, they would like to pay pregnant women to "give-up" (not open to abuse at all), and even prescribe vapes on the NHS, which apparently has no more problems with priority cases and expenditure.

And the worst part - this could well be a popular set of measures.

Disney already show tobacco use as a trigger word warning at the top of the screen

Sorry to derail - the laws that result just impact us. But it does always feel like everything around it is only a financial greed thing - as usual. The laws probably have no impact other than take away pub garden smoking (among others), which i think is a low impact sad freedom to lose.

Cigars are just collateral, we have no powerful cigar smokers in this country it seems. The increase to the smoking legal age to buy each year is pretty smart when it comes to getting rid of cigarettes.

This what hunters et al should be interested in. Wonder if they get involved? I think they did to get the concessions for cigar sampling IIRC. But thats in very limited locations. Public spaces is another kettle of fish.

I had heard that they and others were lobbying strongly on this, time will tell I guess

I think if pub garden smoking is banned it will be another nail in the coffin for a lot of establishments. It really makes my piss boil that the lefty health police aren't satisfied with pushing smokers outside they want a total ban.
All this political correctness and wokeism is ruining our society. I'm bloody glad I am old enough to remember the good times.

I don't think anti-smoking legislation has anything to do with political correctness or wokeism, probably better labelled as nanny state-ism.

And it's dishy Rishi's govt aiming to eradicate smoking, not sure I'd call them lefty either

UK was behind the curve in 2007 with the ban on smoking in pubs. That’s when I quit cigarettes, happened to coincide with my intention to stop when I turned 30… Tide has turned on tobacco - old news an easy win for the current government. The new thing, vaping, imagine the uproar if the state legislated against that.

Apparently smokers still make up 12.5% of our population, they must be doing it in secret!
