  • The latest from the Tories

Please don’t get into politics (too much) but from the Tory conference today we have this:

Sunak proposes raises smoking age every year to create 'smoke-free generation'

Sunak has just proposed "that in future we raise the smoking age by one year, every year - that means a 14- year-old today will never be legally sold a cigarette".

It seems fixing the economic cost of living crisis, rampant housing crisis, and all of the other things that are currently fire, are less of a priority than smoking.

I wonder what H&F and all the cigar merchants will make of it? Will anyone step into the late Simon Chase's shoes and lobby for an exemption for cigars?

As soon as i heard new zealand doing it, it wouldn't take long for us to follow. Plain packaging ,no bands, will be next. Id assume the same age restrictions being introduced to sugary confectionary and processed foods

No, but in the long term, it doesn't seem to bode well for the UK cigar industry. Or this forum for that matter! Mind you, with the way things are going in Cuba.......

Will cigar prices go up, down or remain unaffected?
My guess is we’re too small a market.

Banning things always goes so well…

My only concern will be them either further limiting or banning people bringing any tobacco products in to the UK. 50 cigars is already pretty shit but a lot better than other countries.

Should be no surprise and let's be honest where cigarettes are concerned it's only a good thing.

And yet ignoring vaping which is rife amongst the young. In time I suspect vaping will prove to be a greater health problem than smoking and definitely worse than cigar smoking.

I have long since stopped wasting my time trying to understand their shitty decision making

On BBC1 this morning, the Director of Forest was there to argue against the proposed age raising to buy tobacco. I thought he did a poor job & when pressed by Naga, he admitted he wasn't a smoker! From the way he said it, I got the impression he never had been. Hard to understand why he would be chosen to lead the group.

FOREST (short for "Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco") is a United Kingdom smokers' rights group primarily funded by the tobacco industry which campaigns against what it sees as "excessive regulation" of smoking and tobacco products.

Speaking as a Medic & a smoker, I can see both sides of the argument but I would agree to increasing the age annually until 21yo. No point going older & very few start smoking fags after that age. Think of enforcement, very difficult & a pain for the shop staff, supermarkets ect, when they already face so much agravation & even violence.

It's not really so strange that he doesn't smoke. I've never smoked cigarettes but I would defend anyone else's right to do so, especially if I was paid to do it!

Don’t worry, if they don’t ban it they will just tax us into submission. I suppose people are just waking up to learn about meat taxes in the near future, it’s not tin foil hat stuff anymore this is all out in the open.

in truth we will be subservient plebs who will be unable to drive/own cars, eat meat or be able to afford to go on holiday… enjoy it while you can
