It is all rather depressing.
I do have to admire the idea behind the program though. It's the perfect formula. Not only does it feed the dream that 'anyone can make it big' but the earlier stages with all the terrible auditions are pure comedy. That the audience can get involved in choosing who makes it big is also flattering to the ego of those voting, that they have the power.
