  • The Garden

Starting to get that spring feeling now and looking forward to enjoying a smoke in the garden again. Few beers, cigar and BBQ on the go, happy days again. The garden has had a couple of cuts and im gearing up for whats becoming the annual routing of scarification, top dressing and overseding after the dogs and toddler have made a mess over winter.

Anyone else preciouse about their lawn? what tips and tricks can we share?

Im after a cordless strimmer to save the faff with wire everywhere (toddler running around with it!) and trying seed and feeds from A1 lawns.

    What you upto?

Would love a nice grassy lawn, but surrounded by neighbours huge trees whose roots go all across our garden and create a lot of shade. Havent reseeded for a while now as missus claims its a waste of money me doing it half arsed. I've got an electric scarifyer but after using it - there's no green on the ground. That was a couple years ago now. Now wife just wants to bring in a lawn expert :-/ I might concede....

Also clay soil if that makes any difference.

    .--
I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

Never had much of a lawn, just accept the fact that I have a shady garden - even if it does face south east. And what the shade doesn’t do for the dog does😀🐶

Give it another go, i took mine right back to mud, basically scarified the hell out of it. Ended up laying 3 ton of top soild and grew it back from seed. But i seeded at the wrong time of year and found it hard to keep it wet enough. You can get specific shady seed and as far as i know the seed does needs a fertiliser down with it.

have a look on A1, and they even do a subscription service where they send you what you need when you need it. Might be worth a go.

My soild is quite clay heavy. If you have a drainage problem airating might help. I havent done mine yet but might be the next step

After I put in the deck and shed last year I killed off the lawn as it was a lot of weeds/moss and had been trampled on from the work I'd done. I tilled it levelled it with top soil and re-seeded the whole thing. Didn't take too long and looked great after it had grown in.
It looks pretty crap now though, just applied iron sulphate to green it up, overseeded and put some top soil on to get it back to where it was.
It's definitely a yearly job to keep on top of, we are looking to move soon so I've done half a job this year just to make it look nice.
I'll probably be repeating the whole thing again in a few months as I'll be needing a new smoking shelter once we've moved.

We are having our back garden landscaped in mid May. The lawn currently slopes down, which makes playing football and cricket with my son interesting. We are going to have it levelled, add a retaining wall, add a large and more useable patio.

Gave the grass its first cut last weekend, it looks so much better, despite still being very wet.

Fake grass, it looks very realistic nowadays and you just wash and hoover it

I did suggest that, as it would be far easier. Definite no from MrsB though!

The Ryobi One tools are great cordless, I’ve got the mower and strimmer. Plan to do the first cut of the year this weekend so it’s still “long” then gradually get shorter over the next couple of weeks for scarifying. Then top dressing and possibly some over seeding. Not a nerd though!

Sounds like fun! If you teach him to play on a hill imagine how good he will be on a flat 😂.. That's the way!

We thought about that but we have dogs, I think the mess would be grim! I have seen some that looks ace though

Why electric and why just a strimmer for lawns?
I have a petrol multi tool so can strim certain areas I’ve seeded with wild flowers, brush cutter for the tough ground, hedge trimmers and a small branch chain saw.
Grass is growing like mad now so will be time for weekly cuts soon.
Re turfing is probably the quickest as reseeding a whole area is a pain.
