  • There's always hope

We often wonder what future cigar smoking has but this week I saw evidence that people are quietly smoking them everywhere. I had a young lady estate agent round who told me that she and her boyfriend had enjoyed some cigars at Christmas that their friends had brought them from the Caymans and then the lady photographer chipped in that her boyfriend likes to smoke Churchills though she didn't know what brand.
A few days later I was at hospital for a pre-op assessment when of course the subject of smoking came up and the nurse told me that her husband likes a cigar too.
    Where there's smoke there's hope!

Sometimes it takes a while for people to appreciate the finer things in life and to just slow down a bit. Took me until I was 38 to appreciate cigars and red wine and the relaxation surrounding them

Well certain luxury goods are rising in value like crazy, such as watches, and cigars are a luxury good to most people, esp the premium Cubans, so in the decade the rich won, as the BBC put it, due to mass Quantitative Easing, the growing Chinese Middle Class, Brexit making UK goods dead cheap, and booming stock and crypto markets, there is no shortage of spec money around, and cigars might well be on the radar for alot of "investors".

And we have certainly seen prices moving up sharply recently. But the key to making a new market take off is social media and so, altho it is unlikely, if cigars suddenly started getting traction on there, esp thru certain well-followed celebs going viral, then the cigar market could become a new asset class and things could really change.

Apparently, there has been a huge increase in younger cigar smokers. It used to be mainly people aged 60+ but now there are a lot more people aged 20s and early 30s smoking cigars than there were years ago. Admittedly, I am in the early 30s demographic.

I once read, some yrs ago, that most start smoking Cuban cigars in their 30's, this makes sense from several fronts; they have finally a little disposable income & have been introduced to some of life's finer pleasures. I'd have thought with the recent price hikes that might well increase to 40's. But perhaps younger fans will start & stay longer with NC's, which certainly seem to have an appeal to the younger hip audience. Although not much cheaper these days, at least more accessible.

Yeah I must admit I have probably smoked more NC than CC. Not a deliberate thing it's just how things have worked out when I have walked into the cigar shop and picked up the one I felt most drawn to on the day. I did have my first CC in my 30s though which does fit what you are saying.

My most smoked brand is Davidoff.

Just from speaking to peolle at work, there's 3 that I know who enjoy a cigar. They're all at/nearing retirement age though, so well within expectations 😆

What i find sad is how folks hide their cigar pleasures because its somehow seen as socially bad. One of my chaplain colleagues smokes and several aircrew colleagues, yet none of us knew the other was a brother till it slipped out. Maybe i should take up crossdressing and sheepshagging...its more socially acceptable these days. And cheaper.
