Humidor size advice.

Reading around about setting up a humidor, there is an opinion that dead space should be avoided. What's peoples' thoughts on this one please as almost made my mind up about a purchase.

Chris, I'd agree with that, that dead/empty space should be avoided as it's harder to get your humidity up to between 65-72 and keep it there when you've a lot of empty space.

But saying that the only way to avoid it is to fill your humidor up as soon as you've purchased it, which as you can imagine would be very costly or fill it with some pieces of spanish cedar which not eveyone has lying about so somtimes you just have to put up with it best you can.

Another good piece of advice in relation to purchasing a humidor is always buy one twice as big as you think you'll need because believe it or not you fill them up quicker than you would believe.

Hey Gary,
You read my mind on two counts there: a spair piece of Spanish cedar (which I cannot see me finding) and the size issue. Basically, I was looking at a 50ct unit thinking that would do me for good (which it probably would), however, the stockist has only got 75ct units in the style I want but will drop the price to meet me in the middle. I think I'll go for it. Currently only have about 35 sticks but like you say, it increases.

One tip I read somewhere is to use bubble wrap to fill up the empty space as a 'humidity-neutral' filler. It doesn't look pretty but it's cheaper than Spanish Cedar or cigars if you just want something to pad it out.
I'm currently using it and it seems to do the job fine.

Why don't you just wrap the whole thing in bubble wrap and see what happens? (Just Kidding, of course )

Truth is, I never had much luck or trusted static-type desk top humidors - too much potential for dramatic himidity shifts and drying out unless vigilantly monitored.

I age my puros in a electronicly controled fan forced type humidor which regulates the humidity by circulating the air/himidy on regular intervals. Consequently, it doesn't matter if there are empty spaces and, to the contrary, it is better to have some space between the boxes so the humidity can circulate properly.

Definately go big. First off humidor makers usually over estimate how much thier humidors will hold. Secondly, you will fill it up faster than you think. I went from a 50 count, to a 100 count, to a 300 count, to a coolerdor and finally bit the bullet and bought a cabinet humidor that I love. Go big CJ you won't regret it.

Ok, tomorrow I'll see if I can get a picture of my humidor posted, but I'm not that computer savvy. Just to wet your appetite I'm going to give you a link to the manufacture's website. I bought the Aristocrat M Plus, with a few additional bells and whistles. The company is based in Texas and the owner Bob could not have been nicer to me when I was ordering my humidor. He took the time to answer any questions and gave me a few good tips too. His humidors are all hand made and in my opinion works of art. They aren't cheap but you get what you pay for.
