Amazing how many of us use the good old DE razors, another Futur user here stays tidier longer and I find its so relaxing.

I actually enjoy shaving now, which I have never done before.

Just picked up my Merkur Futur today with some Merkur and Feather blades, new soap dish and badger brush ready to slash my face to ribbons tomorrow lol. I've always used an electric razor for speed at work, i used to to work and no matter how close a shave i would get at home as soon as my face would get wind chill i gave myself a 5 o'clock shadow and looked like i hadn't bothered lol. For special occasions i would wet shave and use a Mach 3 but i find the multiple blades would cause irritation, hopefully the single blade and correct preparation will help. Looking forward to a chore turning into a pleasure.

Well done Sir, I bought a Futur (As a modern compliment to my Gillette Fat Boy) about two weeks ago.

Brilliant razor, amazing weight and smoothness in shave.

Using it with Merkur Plats, and Derbys at the mo, getting marginally better results with the Merkur.

If you look on the Truefitt & Hill website they do a wonderful 'sampler' for ?12.

It comes in a velvet Truefitt & Hill bag and contains a sample of every product they do! Brilliant value and has done it's job as have purchased after shave balm and cologne from them since. I'm most of the way through all the samples now but use the velvet bag as a travel bag for my razors.

Don't use Irishbarber though (Amazon and eBay sellers) have lost my orders, delivered them to the wrong address, and their carriage charges are very high.

Dam you, one sampler ordered lol. Was looking at the Irish barber when i was looking for the Merkur, glad i didn't order from them now. Think i'm going to shave with the Merkur blades for a week or two then try the feather razors that are supposed to be very sharp although i'll stick with whatever works best for me. What number do you find works best with you with the Futur?

My only advice is DO NOT PRESS. Let the weight of the razor shave you. You might read this and think 'Yeah, yeah...' and shave with pressure and think you get a great shave. It can be much better.
The lightest touch is all you need. The razor is there to cut, not drag it off your face.

Very good advice from Dave, otherwise you skin will suffer, there are lots of good YouTube videos on technique and multipass shaves. Well worth a look.

Only other thing I'd say is essential is an alum bloc, makes such a difference to the after shave routine, stops nicks, closes pores, leaves skin baby arse smooth.
Lasts for yonks, cost per shave must be 0.000000000001p!!

Totally agree I love the alum block after a shave just seems to finish things off nicely but not nice if you get it in your mouth.

I started shaving with my Futur set to 2, I find its all I need for a close shave in two passes

For my first DE shave I'm very impressed. Got to work on my technique but got a very close shave with the futur on number 2 with a merkur blade. Love the precise feeling of just one blade. A lot less shaving rash compared to my Mach 3. Could have probably got a closer shave but I think baby steps is the way to go lol.

You'll now go around for hours stroking your chin like a thoughtful professorial type!

                    Good innit!

Now stop what you're doing and buy an alum block!

Already got an alum stick. Just nicked a few spots on my neck from the previous Mach 3 shaving rash. Nothing a wash with cold water 30 mins later didn't solve.

Jibjob, did you just shave one pass, for a really close shave try the following shave once, lather up again and shave again?

If I am going out I sometimes lather up again and have a third pass with very little irritation. first pass with the grain, second pass against the grain and third pass across the grain of hair growth.

And do yourself a favour follow the link above and invest in an Alum Box, David is correct you will never look back

Had a hot steamy shower to open the pores then lathered up and went with the grain, quick hot shower to rinse and inspect. Looked good but felt rough. Lathered up again and went against the grain. Felt a lot more consistent against the grain and now feels a lot smoother but not perfect as I was playing it very safe as I didn't want to shred my face on the first attempt lol. Held the blade at about a 40 degree angle and let the weight of the razor do all the work.

Just practice then, sounds about right although I use a a smaller angle than 40 most say about 30 degrees but I use slightly less.

Have fun and enjoy, maybe celebrate with a nice stick

Have a look at the three pass tutorial vids on youtube, some good stuff on grain and how we all presume everyone has the same grain pattern!

Everyones technique/method differs it would seem, same basic rules just 'your' way of doing it.

I've now got my three pass shave down pat.

                              Hot Towel
                              Lather - With Grain
                              Rinse/Lather - Across Grain
                              Rinse Lather - Against Grain
                              Rinse - Alum Bar
                              Rinse/Dry - Balm
                              Cologne

Bloody works, how come no one told me all this when I was a hairy teen!

Alum/Styptic sticks are handy for stopping nicks, but an alum block does a different job, after shave, rinse then you wet it with cold water and then rub all over your face.

It leaves your face remarkably smooth, of all the balms lotions, colognes et al I've bought it's the one thing I'll never stop using.

Anyone here tried Talc? Lot's of people rave about it, I'm just keen to try all variants now.

Just got my truefitt and hill selection.

Decisions decisions. After my first shave it is getting a lot smoother and the razor feels like it is doing a lot less work. Dam you Mach 3 why did you torment me for so many years lol.
