Does your doctor's surgery ask you about your smoking habits?

I booked an appointment today for something insignificant, and I was asked whether I smoked, and how often I smoked.

I said "Well... I smoke the odd cigar", and they backed off.

    I did get...

"If you ever feel like giving up, we have free counselling and advice".

I have a female doctor who wanted me off cigars and on to cigarettes. I've told that twice on here before.

So... I book myself in to see a male doctor I've seen in a local pub garden toking on Montecristos. (I went to look and sniff!). I know I'll escape too much preaching this way as we're both aficionados!

Pretty much the same here, just some light admonishment and then they move on. The suggestion made to you to switch from cigars to cigarettes is utterly bizzare at first, but I think it's just based on a fundamental misunderstanding.

It seems she assumed that you smoked cigars because of the intense nicotene hit ( about ten times higher in a cigar ), and therefore the higher tar in cigars would be more damaging when smoked as frequently as good old fags. It's a pretty insulting assumption, really, totally ignoring the concept that it's possible to smoke in moderation and with refinement. Sadly though there's accuracy in there too as a lot of folk don't have the willpower to have just some nicotene in their lives as opposed to a lot or none at all.

What I'm waffling about, of course, is that she shouldn't have suggested it but I see her reasoning.

I was completely astounded at her suggestion, Gari.
I imagine she leads a life of no sex and no fun.
      I don't know why...

I get asked this all the time and I simply say "I smoke cigars." Let them preach - I simply give them a nice frozen smile until they go on about their business.
