  • Most underused words...

Continuing the trend of odd threads along these lines, how about your favourite words which aren't used half as much as they should be.

A couple to get us started:

    whimsical

    nincompoop

    Empire
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"

I agree... back in the old days we, The British, had an Empire... Since the 'changing of the guards' in relation to 'World Super Powers', the word Empire now appears to be a taboo. Crafty! Very crafty indeed!

              spade

There just aren't enough people prepared to call a spade a spade anymore... As such, the word has fallen into apparant dis-use.

And, having a Corporal Jones moment: nonchalant

Recalcitrant is one word that comes to mind. Another is salubrious. Considering I try to keep people amused I suppose that I'm a Salubrious Recalcitrant. LOL.

I love this word and use it as frequently as circumstances allow (which is surprisingly often).

                          Likewise:

You'd be amazed at how many people start co-opting this one, once they hear it.

                          Another favourite

As in 'less than' of course - hey, I live in Britain after all.

As a test, I'm going to try and work all three into a conversation later today - my small contribution to keeping our wonderfully subtle and expressive language alive.

I shall also attempt to slip in:
                          Troglodyte and/or Neanderthal

Perhaps we should start a campaign to bring them back into popular parlance?
At the very least it would confound and befuddle the proletariat - that's always fun (if a little too easy).

                          So. . . who's with me. . ?

LMAO. I'll try it tomorrow but I'm sure my business partner will just look at me like I'm screwed in the head. We are Aussies after all.

A guy I met in an emergency ward a while ago who was struggling with his mums condition and how to organize it all. He stated "I'm such a Luddite!". I was taken aback as I had not heard that for years and was glad to see it still existed in our language.
