  • Recession

I know it's not cigar-related, but I wondered how the recession is influencing us, or those we know and love, etc.

I've had two texts today (which made me want to post this thread) asking me to ask ANYONE I KNOW if they have any painting and decorating going.

The first was from a painter and decorator I know who has no work.

The second was from a marine engineer working in sea radar equipment at a nearby port who has been made redundant. He is now looking for painting and decorating, too.

As a teacher married to a breast cancer nurse, my missus and I are in what are now deemed secure jobs. They pay reasonably well, but not top-whack excitingly, but they are not prone to economic roller coaster rides as much as in many jobs.

It's funny. When the economy goes tits up, people want to get into teaching!

I had an email from a research scientist friend of mine who works at Pfizer close to where I live. His Department are (quote) shitting it because the next tranche of redundancies will come from his specialism.

I play in my band for pleasure and make a tidy sum next to my salary. I do look at it very much as a second income. The family will go to Cuba this year entirely on the takings, and there'll be more.

The friend who is a research scientist saw the writing on the wall about two years ago. He's a photography nut. He invested in superb equipment and started doing wedding photography. He is now earning about 40% of his considerable Pfizer salary again each year by wedding and event photography because - sensible guy - he saw the chop coming.

My mate and I work hard at a second 'thing' and put loads of hours in for what we do. I also consider it a 'safety belt' of sorts because if I get the chop, our calendar is full of gigs and I know there will be some lucre coming in.

I am really worried that my son will not find a job when he graduates from University this Summer. I love him to bits - of course - but I don't want him to have to move out of London and return to my uneventful seaside town. It will make University appear to have been a total waste of time.

I have to say my approach in bad times like this amounts to:
Fuck this. I need to keep having a laugh.
I find that 9/10 times it's an approach that pays off.

How is it for other Brothers Of The Leaf?

Hi Bryan, i have to say from my situe things are great. I`m a master Carpenter and i have work all over scotland and the north east and even been asked to work in france not that long ago, i wouldn't say i was in a secure job but i`ve got weeks full of work all year and i have 3 trips to fit in somewhere.I have enough work i would take on another 2 guys if i could.
Yet a very close mate of mine works for a builder just along from me and the company he works for has just had to lay off 70 guys so things must be bad, its just pot luck.
Totally agree with you, a laugh is well needed at times.
What kind of music is it you sing mostly Bryan??
Chill out and enjoy a good cuban when you can

Living along the border as I do ie Northern/Southern Ireland the dynamics of the current recessionary climate would be borne out in retail shopping patterns primarily driven by currency matters ie euro vs sterling effectively. A lot of people in my area appear to going down under ie Australia in search of work. I being a graduate don't have the perceived advantage many people assume I should have. My work presently is of a freelance nature, doing a mixture of translation and tutoring work. I find though a lot of people would ask for free language lessons which quite frankly is somewhat of a cheek.

When I swear in several languages, doesn't exactly help my blood pressure.

        For SC / Chris:

I fancy myself as a singer, but am content to sing backing vocals in my band.

I play keyboards in a pub and functions covers band called EK1. Our website has media clips on it.

I also write and record original stuff for a bit of fun. Here's some arseabout YouTube clips.

Other musos on here are Drewmidorn and Larrysputnik.

We're doing alright for creative cigar chompers on here!

          Afternoon Bryan,

Got my voice trained when I was younger, sing now and again at various family events and social functions.

Ps: Hope the marking is getting done?

Do you get a lot of freelance translation work, Gabriel?
And have you given up the teaching idea?
We've discussed aspects of this before, but I'd advise anyone who was considering 'drifting' into teaching not to do it.

            Free lessons is a cheek!

Swearing is neat in foreign, isn't it?!

                Bryan,

The freelance translation work I would find tends to be very hit n miss ie I may be asked to translate healthcare/legal documents and sometimes have to act as an interpreter at the courts or in liaison with medical staff. The problem I find Bryan is that I am very much a linguist by design rather than personal choice. I would be getting rave reviews from my students who I teach privately at present, they believe I am doing a good job. I would tend to somewhat dismissive of my natural language ability in that I never really had to burst a blood vessel to learn the languages I currently have.

My son was laid off work last week. They shut the gents clothes shop he worked in.
He still lives with us and now he's on the computer all day, and entertaining his girlfriend all night. Lucky beggar.

At my place of work we've been told we have 3 months to increase business by 50% or the place will be shut down.
The strange thing is ...I don't really care.

I work in a university so I feel my job is relatively secure. My girlfriend is in recruitment and people are being laid off left, right and centre around her. Funny thing is, she's sick of her job and wants to look for a new one! Difficult time to try that I think...

Parents are retired and my brother, who works at a courier firm, hasn't mentioned any worries. Though any time he says anything about money or politics I go off on one, so he might just not be for that reason!

I work for a rather large bank that most of you now own ha ha. Its quite worrying but luckily enough I work in the car insurance side of it which is relatively secure as everyone needs car insurance.

Bryan mate i can play percussion, played the drums mostly since the early days of school. Done a few bands, but now i just lay down sets for soloists and mates in groups that dont have a drummer. Not bad at computerised sounds and setting out tracks and set pieces. Are you after a drummer Bryan ?

SC - Only a notional imaginary band formed by the musos on the forum.

I think you are now the drummer!

It's funny how a recession can hit some and improve things for others. These messes are hellishly complex. Businesses and industries shut down, yet the motorways and main routes are still choc-a-block with trucks. The economy still turns.

I watched daytime TV - Jeremy Kyle, Good Morning Britain - for three days when I had flu recently and I felt like slitting my wrists. I don't want to be laid off to a future of that bollocks. It wasn't even ironically amusing in a One Show World Of Cack way.

Let's hope we all keep our heads above water on here, anyway...

I`ve never watched tv first thing, the girlfriend has it on if she works from home for the day, but i cant stand it!. The last time i saw any was when Judy and Richard did This Morning, that made me want to slit my wrists too lol.
This recession is hell for some and amazing for others and then the ones in the middle it hasnt touched yet. For the ones that wont feel a thing, i cant wait to see how this all affects things for the second half of the year and, even more the begining of next year! You can already get a bogof on cars so what will be next?
