Day out in Oxford

Went to Oxford today, drove paula down so she could pay for her new American Quarter Horse Western Saddle, and decided to have a quick visit to Frederick Tranters, nice coffee down a side street where i was not the only one smoking a cigar..

Sat having coffee smoking a leoninos churchill,, then moved on to have a quick look in Tranters, nothing special but very friendly staff even if the dog did shuffle its ass on the carpet to wipe its bottom.. Didnt buy anything though just went to look...

Best to go to Oxford during the week, it's rammed at the weekend. I keep meaning to visit Tranters but by the time I get parked and start walking I give up and just want to get out of Oxford.

Yes near pizza express, it was very pleasant, went to collect a saddle and i figured as i was there id have a look around, traffic was a night mare, cost ?4 to park for an hour near the odeon cinema...

I lived in Swindon for 8 years and thats the first time i actually ventured into Oxford, now i live 2 1/2 hours away i call in.. bizzarre or what lmao

Sounds like a very pleasant afternoon. Just the sort of environment that makes cigars all the more enjoyable - nice coffee, little hidey-hole down a quaint side street. And, it's always better when there are other lovers of the leaf in the vicinity.

It is sometimes a bit surreal in Tranters, his humidor has many hidden delights in it which he will only show you if he likes the cut of your jib. Things such as the fantastic Opus X Robusto and Fuente's are never out on view but he has them hidden away. I don't know if he only keeps them for his favourite customers or has had some nicked.

Always worth popping in though and Oxford is nice place for a smoke!

Were you talking about the Pizza Express near the covered market or am i completely mistaken? if so the cigar shop is not there.

Yes sat just outside a little cafe there... had to walk for ages to get to the high street... His stock was very limited, very hot in the shop and humi temp was up at 78. Nice enough chap there though, and the lass with a rather huge odd looking tattoo on her right leg. The little dog was busy wiping its butt on the carpet adding to the aromas of pipe tobacco of which there were plenty to choose.

Most of the cigar stock seemed pretty depleted as though he could have done with restocking.

Despite their better judgement they once sold me some straight Perique tobacco to smoke in a new Meerschaum pipe (if you know Sir Henry at Rawlinson end you would understand), he thought I was barking to smoke it straight.

He was right.

I agree too! LOL. There's no way I could force myself to do that. Just 7% Perique in a blend is considered a very, very large amount.

There used to be a guy called Oz who used to run the place and he was great very knowledgeable but not sure what has happened to him. The girl I have seen a couple of times and can find her to be a bit snappy at times. I do not go in there as regular as I used to as the internet has become a good and cheaper place to source stoogies.

Yeah Pizza express is on one of the entrances to the market.

I don't tend to walk that far down that street to ever get to Tranters but doesn't sound like I'm missing out.

I know you said you shop online but do you know any other cigar shops in the Oxfordshire area? Always nice to have a gander. Havana House in Windsor is a pretty nice shop to just have browse.

Not in Oxfordshire unless it's one of the 5* hotels I.e. Malmaison and I think there is a random hotel in Milton under whichwood. However there is a place in Stratford upon Avon which isn't too far away but that is probably the closest.

Milton, you sure? My parents live in Milton and I'm not even sure there is a hotel there? I'll have to investigate.
