Home Cineama System - 5.1 Recommendations, please

I've bought my first Home Cinema System and have been enjoying the house shaking as I watch films. I've never had one before and am hooked on it.

The improved sound with a great picture has really got me interested in films again, and beefs up the normal broadcast sound no end, too.

The best thing about watching live music is that you can hear the decay of each instrument, and every part of the drum kit is separated and clear. You also appreciate the silences.

I'll list the films I've vibrated through so far, and ask folk to recommend any other house-shakers they might think of. I'm off work with what I'm now calling flu, so it has given me some near-death time to flesh out and take my mind off things.

In no particular order, I've watched... or have on my pile still to watch:

I would really appreciate any recommendations for films to think about hiring or buying that have spectacular 5.1 soundtracks if folk have the time to write them here.

The Long Good Friday sounds amazing on my 5.1 system, also got a Boxset with all the episodes of Miami Vice in 5.1 so Ive been ploughing through them, music sounds fantastic!

Goodfellas is one of the greatest Mafia movies made and the soundtrack is class... I'd almost go as far as to say its one of the greatest movies ever made.

Got my first silliness today. Put on TOMMY and it wouldn't load. I've got the Region 2 lock in this machine, whereas with my previous DVD player would play anything.

I'm going to buy TOMMY again. I am a BIG Who fan - I particularly like Quadrophenia (audio version).

I also have to say TOMMY is one of the biggest dog turds in film music. Ken Russell et al must have been rammed with cake when they made it.

I wanted to watch Ann Margret roll around in baked beans that pour out of a TV in 5.1.

I wanted to be cheered up. I was denied.

It is monumental camp nonsense, and therefore I add it to my list of the best films of all time.

Most DVD players can be unlocked by entering a long strange combination of keys on the handset or pressing certain keys whilst powering it on..... you can usually find the codes on the internet.... however if anyone asks you where this information comes from you ain't seen me gov!

Seems ridiculous to have made regions for DVDs in the first place. Surely they never made audio CDs with regional restrictions?

I love Chas n Dave. I bought their Best Of CD, and the bastard wouldn't deliver itself over to mp3/iPod.

Did they think they'd earn more that way?

Buster Bloodvessel lol of Bad Manners said in an interview recently that he thinks we - EK1 - are the best live group in Kent.

The DVD regions are mainly to do with release dates I think. Its to "protect" the cinema industry who, apparently, don't have enough money already! So that you can't get an american DVD for a movie that isn't yet out in England!

The other problem is to do with distribution rights (and that is the same for I tunes, and would have been the same for CDs if they'd thought about it when they set it up). Sometimes different distributors hold the rights in different regions.

They are still all, and I can say this without any proviso, Bastards to a man!

Much like A&R guys and Lawyers!

I've got a fairly nice 5.1 system - the problem is I've realised that I don't watch that many action/sci-fi/big budget blokbuster type films. I tend to prefer independent and some foreign language films. So it's pretty much wasted on me!

I'd second Goodfellas - definitely one of my top films, good soundtrack but doesn't gain much from the 5.1 experience. Casino too, but I do have a soft-spot for gangster films.

Black Hawk Down will sound nice. Also got the Jason Bourne trilogy for Christmas which are three of my favourite films and have pretty good surround.

Hi Bryan i bet it sounds amazing!!
I installed a surround sound system into my place when i built it and the first thing i played at full blast was a cd, a recording system had been placed on an aircraft carrier with jets flying past and taking off. What a sound! honestly it nearly blew my ears let alone the speakers haha. So not much of a dvd but for sound clarity and depth with a slight reverb it sounded amazing. I would recomend it for any great surround sound system!!.

I'm into jets so I'll try something like that out. I believe I can Bluetooth my laptop over to the system somehow so I'll be trying that as well.
