It definitly looks like meershaum - typical patina?

Yeah, meerschaum does that. It's not actually clay, it's a hydrous form of magnesium silicate. The more you smoke them, the darker they get. Some rich people (eg. middle eastern princes) actually employ people to smoke them sometimes to achieve a perfect colour. Bare hands touching the meer when going for colour is a no-no (oils in the skin affect/mar the colour) and waxing with beeswax helps develop the colours. Colours themselves depend on the type of baccy being smoked.
