I am not judging what others do but I will always support any of the other home nations in any sport as long as they are not playing England.

Ditto, you support your own, or who you own.
"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"

My father and grandfather are/were definite ABE supporters but although I'm technically a Scot (born there, pretty much raised here) I definitely enjoy getting behind England and take pride in the national team.

One of my friends however insists that due to my heritage I shouldn't be allowed to support England or 'take credit' (I have no idea what he means) when they win the World Cup. These are clearly the ramblings of a mad man though as he's half Japanese!

Yep, I'm ABE! Why not? You're our biggest rivals. Does anybody expect Germans to support Holland and vice versa? How about Poland and Russia?

Anyway, the reason for ABE is quite simple and it's spelled in five words. M-E-D-I-A. Nothing against English people but their media is vomit inducing.

BTW, why are English goalkeepers so bloody awful?

It doesnt help the goalkeeper when the players in front of him are absolute shite... the goalie's only got the net behind him, the others just bollocks it up and hope the player behind sorts it, if not they werent last with the play!

I will lend my voice to this and agree with some of the other posts, and back it up with evidence.

The attitude behind A.B.E. to me is the media bias that all national stations have towards England and pretty much ignore the other parts of the UK, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

My current and most recent example which explains this. On the ITV news last night they did a short article on the Queen's Honours recipients. When they moved onto the sports awards they spent roughly 30 seconds going on about Amy Williams and her MBE, no mention what-so-ever about David Coulthard or Tony McCoy and their MBE's.

I would argue that more people have heard of DC and TMcC in the UK who are household names, than Amy Williams. But they are Scottish and Northern Irish and not English, therefore not important enough it seems!

In order to explain it all to our English brothers and sisters, suppose all your tv and media was supported and run my MUFC TV? If you can work that one out, then you've worked out ABE.

Funny you mention the MBE thing as the only person I have heard about through the media is Zeta Jones, who is Welsh!

Isnt the TV regional anyway, as in dont you get a Scotch version of the BBC and ITV etc? I thought this was the case ?

My boss is Scotish and was moaning all day about the Mars Bar being sold with the English flag on it in Scotland, as I said to him at the time FFS dont buy the bloody bar if you feel so strongly about it. Same goes for the telly, if you dont want to hear about the World Cup change the channel, Im sure if Scotland were actually in the thing they would be metioned..... abit

I understand the sentiment and know that feeling prejudice is a very different experience from emphasising with victims of prejudice so I don't judge others feelings.

I would like to say that it is a real shame that some feel the need to perpetuate boundaries because of how the self-serving media behave ...seems like an own goal

Sure, there are regional variations on the BBC etc. but that doesn't go to the WC. We get the English commentators and a constant barrage of England, England and commentators even talking about England during the Argentina game! We SHOULD have Scottish commentators but the tv stations don't run to that. The BBC runs wall to wall England over the whole of the UK almost as if England WAS the UK.

Imagine you had to watch the WC with pictures supplied by NDR or ZDF? How would you feel if all the football was seen through German eyes?

still not buying this myself, I reckon if Scotland were in the thing there would be coverage from ex Scots players etc and if you want that you can always have a bit of Andy Gray over on Sky ... but then you wont like that either as he has said he is supporting England to win

Of course they support England to win! They live in England and work for Englsih tv stations. To want anyone else to win would be employment suicide!

Here's a question for you. If the final was, say, Argentina against Germany, who would you want to win?
