Learning Spanish

When the time is right I'm going to leave england to travel the south of spain and south america with guitar, a little tupperdor of cigars and nothing much else. I want to get down and dirty and soak up REAL andalucian gypsy flamenco and latin music. In preparation I'm going to start learning spanish.

I took spanish, german and french for GCSEs and have a fair grasp of learning grammar, so I'm going to teach myself spanish in my spare time. Not looking at taking lessons as I have some gorgeous spanish friends who will teach me in return for music lessons (god bless the guitar)

Can anyone recommend any good books/tutors/learning aids?

I'm downloading TV series in spanish with english dubs... rather fancy watching lost again in spanish... perdido!!!

Can't a man named TJCoro teach you how to be very similar to this man. I mean I know he is not Spanish but they aren't far off.

Plus TJ has a large cigar collection unlike the man in the photo!

If I were a few (few dozen) years younger I'd be liken' to do something similar myself but given that I already look like the dude in your photo -except my beard is totally white!- I figure I'm past my "best before" date.

So instead of combining guitar with Spanish culture, I've been taking my Spanish lessons in Havana and combining with some of the more "mature" aspects of Cuban culture: namely lots of cigars and rum.
It's been working well so far. Other Spanish-speaking folk dis my Havana accent but the tabacos y ron son una precia buena.

Maybe next year... Tres lessons from the guy who builds them.

I have the (somewhat faded) T-shirt, but never (to my eternal regret), managed to learn how to pull off the irregular flamenco hand-clapping technique.

If you master the art you will be able to 'jam' in any rustic tapas bar with just your hands for an instrument, and the fire of a gypsy in your soul.

I am up in the sierra's right now, overlooking a pueblo blanco and about to dig into churros and chocolate. So, for now, adios mi amigo.

I have no idea why my school didn't offer the option of Spanish. It seems like a much more useful language than French or German as French speaking nations all seem to know English and the only time I've had to use German was as a fall back in Spain!

Good going Lascaux, I'm starting to try and pick it up as a necessary for travelling through South and Central America next year.

started some basic flamenco techniques + soleares
left hands easy enough coming from classical but the right hand is gonna be a challenge. might just post youtubes of my progress in a month or two

taking a trip up to barbican library to grab some tutor books, hopefully they'll have audio tapes too
