tbh Lee i'm bloody well glad you gave the kids father a right twatting, parents should know better these days and bring kids up with more respect. You obviuosly brought yours up correctly and shes studying to be a doctor , i bet the the little scroat who beat her up is on the dole, doped up and still a git., when will this country's government actually stop treating these type of people wth kid gloves and treat them how they treat others.

Sorry to hear that Lee, but you were 100% right in what you did. My older sister was getting racial abuse of one guy at her first job years ago, she was only 17. Me and a mate, both 14 at the time and rugby players, paid him a visit and it never happened again.
I think parents should smack their kids, within reason. I got my fair share and I deserved it. Never did me any harm.Lover of fine Cubans since 2006

Lee, sorry to hear about that, can't be easy.
I think a certain level of national service needs to be brought back. Teaches dicipline and how to respect yourself and others. If you are a pain when you start, you sure do not leave as one. Even if you spend the entire time in the brig. I do understand the flipside though which is it can teach bad 'uns to be worse, but I like to think the good outweighs the bad.
I would of liked to have done it when I left school."Come in here, dear Boy, have a cigar" ....Roger Waters (Pink Floyd)

I tend to wonder, and I'll take a flogging for being the odd one out here
I hear a lot of anecdotal evidence here, but is there any overall evidence that suggests corporal punishment leads to overall reductions in abusive behavior?
My understanding is that the use of violence tends to lead towards more violence later on, rather than less, so I'd be against it. I'd be for it, though, if I saw that it clearly helped and we could be sure that the parents/teachers inflicting it weren't twisted beforehand.

well i'm 42 and in my younger days i had more respect when policemen were allowed to clip you round the lug hole, birching also was a massive deterrent in the older days. Yes alot of parents are to blame but jail over here is like a holiday camp, we need to get a lot tougher on the criminals.I started out with nothing and i've still got most of it left - Seasick Steve

I'm avoiding your question for the moment, Soul, though I would be interested to know which other forms of dissuasion you would propose. I like to believe that teenagers are civilised and will respond to reasoning. I do know very well that isn't always the case.
The background climate in my trade is one where teachers listen for twilight sessions to sociological explanations about how appalling kid behaviour is related to neglect or weak parenting in the first two or three years of a kid's life.
I do find this fascinating - always have done - but we, as professionals, sit there (after the obligatory touchy feely caring whispers to left and pairwork icebreaker right) wondering when the punchline will come.
Like...
So we know some of their parents may have Larkinly fucked them up...
So now what do we do about it?
So far there have been no proposals.
Over coffee, we resort to jokey chats about eugenics. You just have to.
It gets frustrating, you know.
The decent and polite and properly behaved kids are overlooked by teachers who have to deal with the drossy, disruptive and often aggressive ones. It can be a shambles.
I, too, wanted to get something off my chest.

I agree with you about cushy jails. We should be making jails somewhere that perps want to avoid, not somewhere they look forward to!
Lee, you have my sympathy, mate. Musta been hard.
When I was at school, we had what they called Lochgelly tawse. This was a leather strap about 1 inch thick, which was administered to the hands with gusto. I got it copious amounts of times, sometimes for no apparent reason and it hurt like hell! However, it didn't do any good. Deterrents only work if the sanction is terrible and the tawse, while painfull, wore off in minutes!
The only deterrent I ever seen working was a teacher who WAS the deterrent! I remember when I was about 15, there was a guy in the class who was particularly mouthy. He spoke out of turn to this teacher who grabbed him by his lapels and physically threw him out the classroom! There was never any trouble again!
In short, corporal punishment doesn't work unless it is extremely painful. We're not allowed to torture people and rightly so. I don't know what the answer is. I do know however, that sanctions have to be effective and god knows what they should be.No man has the right to fix the boundary of a nation.
No man has the right to say to his country, "Thus far shalt thou go and no further."

Parents these days just don't seem to want to control their kids. Whenever you go in to a supermarket they just let them run wild like it's a playground. I've seen kids running up and down poking produce in chilled sections, and their parents right next to them do nothing. They should be made to pay for the damaged goods and keep their children under control. If you break a piece of pottery in a china shop you have to pay for it. I wouldn't fancy buying food after some kid has poked their finger in it, they're the worst for carrying germs.
Then there's the noise. When they start that high pitched squealing I either move to the other end of the shop if it's big enough, or leave. It's like fingernails on a blackboard.
Or when parents let small children push fully laden trolleys that they can't see over the top of, and end up running into you.

There has been a general shift away from responsibility to rights. It should be play the game at school and you'll do fine - Disrespect people and act like an arse and instead of chance after chance it's off to reform school where the regime is harsh. It would cost a lot to do but it would be money well spent. The decent people can get on with life without the disruptive element and the misbehaved are made to conform.
