  • Holiday smokes - what to pack?

It's that time of year when sun drenched shores in foreign lands are whispering words of seduction and empty hammocks wait invitingly under balmy tropical skies.

Yes, I'm shortly about to de-camp for a summer 'oliday', and my question is this:

If you were about to set off somewhere warm, where you could smoke without fear of censure from the 'Mrs'/significant other - or the massed ranks of non-smoking philistines and other assorted 'hoi-polloi', what would you take out of your humidor and pack?

In my case, I'm thinking of about 20, all different, and mostly the 'good stuff' (hell, its as good an excuse as I can think of).

But, I can't help wondering if there are any interesting choices I may have missed.

So, what would be top of the list from your current stock?

A mag 48 in the morning after breakfast by the outdoor pool; mag 50 in the early afternoon on a boat while fishing for sword fish; a monte no.2 while watching the sunset on the white sandy beach; and a BHK 52 if I get lucky in the evening.

For me it depends on where I am going.

I will always take a few with me but I usually go where the prices are much lower than in the UK, so I take the opportunity to try as many new and different cigars as I can. Then if I find a few I like I make an investment.

Always come back with more then I took with me.

Take more than you need and a good selection, your mood will still dictate what you'll smoke each day.

What he said. Even if you only plan on smoking 20 - take more so you'll still have a some to choose from come the end of the holiday.

And do take (or buy en route) some decent cheapies for quick smokes with morning coffee, mid-morning beer or sitting on the terrace waiting for other half to finish getting ready before going out.

My last 2 week holiday abroad we went to a very small greek island which was incredibly conducive to smoking as we spent almost the entire time outside. Despit having taken both my travel humidors, stocks were begining to look dangerously low even before the first week was out and as a result I nearly cleaned the little kiosk in the town square out of it's entire stock of Toscani. Wouldn't smoke them over here, but they were great with greek beer or a coffee.

Pack nothing, no clothes, no anything. Then when you get there just fill your whole case with cigars
Direct from the House of Cigarsmoke
Smoke em if you got em!

I like your style big fella! Wise words indeed.

I've a trip planned for while I'm away to a LCDH for a few special purchases (OK, it's a bit of a detour, but it should be fine, the wife can't map read), but I wanted to take a 'variety bag' of old and new smokes.

                The list so far:
                A MAG 50, a 48 LE, and a 52 BHK
(Thanks for the suggestions r0lan6 - I will do as you suggest. Sadly though, the prospect of a deep sea fishing trip is probably scrubbed for this break - women on boats, it's not right).

                Instead of a Monte no.2, I've got a Petit Edmundo, a 2008 Sublime (Don't think I've forgotten you Mr Rokkit), and a 2005 D EL.

Cohiba's: Genios, Magicos, secretos, a Siglo VI, a 2003 DC EL and a 2004 Sublime.

NC's: A Padron anniversary (at long last, I'm going to give one a try), and an Oliva Serie V. (I could use some more suggestions on NC's, "I know nuth-eing" Might try and pick up a Nub).

What else... a 2007 Trini ingenios and a Hoyo Regalos (courtesy of Craig - Many thanks), and a few others.

Not that I've been giving it much thought or anything.

I'm off to my local cigar merchants this afternoon, so if anyone has a last minute suggestion for a 'perfect' holiday cigar I should be taking but haven't listed, speak now or forever hold your your puro.

If I buy one and like it there may be a prize.

The Partigas Vacationes, is very rare and only a few people have ever seen them outside of major collections. Originally they were made exclusively for Castro's vacations and gifts for special / diplomatic guests at his holiday villa.

It's a big Salomones shaped stick with an expertly crafted, mini-sombrero shaped head. They come as a three-pack in the varnished 'suitcase' box. Talk to AJ as I understand he may have a source.

                    JL,ERDM

I always pack some JL or ERDM Coronas for my morning smoke when going on holiday. Ideal for post breakfast smoke.
