  • Budget - 22nd June

OK boys and girls, I have a feeling in my water that this is going to get real nasty.

    VAT to 20%
Huge hikes on duty on booze, fags and Cigars.

I'm going to be getting me a tuppador and stuffing the thing with all my smokes for the next year before smiling George does his business all over my life.

    Agreed.

Think 20% VAT a certainty, happening in Europe so will happen here.

The UK has always had a low level of VAT in comparison to other like for like countries so going up to 20% does seem a sensible option for them to take.

I would imagine there could be a public sector pay freeze for a few years or maybe a predetermined % increase year on year.

Whoever was the government would have to make serious changes in order to sort things out. It was clear that Labour held back from doing that at the last budget for fear of losing more votes, then hit us with it after they had won, if they did.

We just have to accept that we are in for a few years of higer taxes and lower spending until the deficit gets under control.

I imagine we may see VAT going on other items as well. Someone who knows much better than me my well correct me here, but much of Europe doesn't have a 0% VAT rate for essentils...its VAT on food and kids clothes too (why there isn't VAT on kids clothes is beyond me).

As a retailer, i heard on the grapevine last week that several large high street stores are applying a VAT rise to stock coming in from the end of this month in preparation, so its pretty much a certainty now.
