Removing water marks on furniture.

Guys, I know it sounds more like a thread for Good Housekeeping or something but had heard that cigar ash mixed to a paste with some water would remove a water stain from furniture.
Anyone able to confirm or refute this, or have any other ideas.
Look forward to a veritable flood of interest and replies to this highly interesting post.

Only references I can find for use of cigar ash is mixing it with chalk to make a dentifrice/tooth powder, or mixing it with poppyseed oil to make grey oil paint

Suppose it would, but if you wipe over afterwards with an antibac spray it should get rid of the smell...maybe...
