Who Will Be The UK's Next Prime Minister?

Gordon Brown is about to visit the Queen at Buckingham Palace to set the date for the next General Election today.

Politics and cigars don't mix. At least one member has written something like that on these pages before now!

So... This post is NOT for us to have a boxing match! It's quite simply a poll to find out what we are currently feeling about who will be in power in mid May.

So - like me - you might be choosing a name here of a politician you will not be voting for.

I've kept it to the three main contenders. However strong the vote for the SNP, their leader will not become the UK PM.

I have not included any of the smaller parties.

Non UK members might like to sit this one out if they don't know the key characters here.

I can see the Conservatives clawing into power. I don't want them to, but I think the country's pretty frustrated with the current powers that be and if people are desperate enough to vote BNP members as MEPs, anything could happen.

I voted for Hung Parliament as it all seems so unclear at the moment.

I'm for executing all standing MP's for treason and starting again. I'd like to volunteer to off Mandelson personally. OK I know he's not an MP but we'll make an exception for him.

Tories are + 10 in the latest polls and therefore just above a hung Parliament. Of course, today marks only the very beginning of this election battle and a lot can change before May 6th. More than that, I simply don't trust polls. Not only do I not entirely trust the methodology, but the simple fact is that while they're usually fairly good for telling you who wins the election, they are often pretty poor at telling you the margins of victory. In an election like this, that really matters. + 5 Conservatives simply is not enough. Indeed, Obama was only just ahead in a few polls in October of '08 and that was after a period where McCain had actually led. In the end of course, it was a landslide comparable to that of LBJ or Reagan.

Personally, I think Lobby-Gate was the end for Labour. Brown and the government were already tremendously unpopular: 10p tax rate, lies to Chilcot and then came those 'cabs for hire'. After expenses, I really think that killed them off. And I remember quite a few commentators saying the same thing at the time.

Forgot your political allegiance, sometimes we just need a change of government. I honestly believe that to be something quite intrinsic in our brand of Western democracy. Or just democracy per-se! Governments get old and tired, ministers resign, the talent pool dries up, they run out of ideas and a common vision, corruption rears its ugly head and in the absence of independents, parties become beholden to their respective bases - be it trade unions or big business.

What does it matter who gets to No 10. They are all a waste of time and you still end up playing " spot the difference " after a while.

I put down for a hung parliament. The conservatives might win with a small majority, but plenty could happen between now and May 6th.

Not that I want a hung parliament, as the markets will take a very dim view of that and I could see us going through another election by November, after losing the UK's "AAA" credit rating and crawling cap in hand to the IMF to fund our deficit as a result.

They are all like pigs at feeding time. into office and it's how much can I get, how many freebies? All those perks and not a penny of tax paid. I get private health care which I pay tax on which takes me outof nhs costs when i need it saving the nhsmoney. Sowhy tax me on it as a perk ?
