  • Gout! What to do?

I've been diagnosed with gout in my left foot. Picture the knuckle for your forefinger and that's the problem spot on my foot. I'm beside myself because I'm hearing that I'm to give up alcohol, red meat, sea food and God knows what else.

Anybody got a few pointers for keeping the beast down?

Hell yeah it hurts. I thought I'd get some good tips here since the only thing I knew about gout before this was from the the cinema. You know English guys smoking pipes, in kilts with their foot all wrapped up in bandages cussing and screaming.

A good move would be to keep really well hydrated at all times and moderate alcohol intake to the point where you know you are not getting dehydrated. Any time your urine is at all yellow get plenty of fluid in you. Unfortunately some poeple are more susceptible to this problem you might be one of them.

My friend has the gout--terrible stuff. According to him, he can't eat red meat, but he can drink some alcoholic beverages, like wine. I've read a couple articles that suggest that taking vitamin c regularly is a helpful preventative, but I can't remember if it helps you once you've got it.

Used to be the disease of the leisure class, but I suppose we're all a bit leisurely in this modern age.

A bit of information here Strife, although there'll no doubt be lots on the 'net.

Sorry to hear about this bugger though

                      my dad suffered from gout.
hes an acupuncturist and hugely knowledgable on alternative therapy and above all diet.

he was also diagnosed diabetic, and he refused to take medication... now with changes to his diet he no longer suffers from gout or diabetes, his blood sugar level is completely fine

the problem is you really have to be tough on yourself. cut out booze/red meat and research the foods that cause your gout to flare up and completely cut them out... takes a lot of willpower but id imagine when you're incapacitated with the blinding pain of gout thats a huge incentive, best of luck

Someone I know had it because she was downing a bottle of sherry a day. The booze flared her up significantly and she was advised to clean up. Hey presto. The gout shipped out.

Thank you all for the input. I do tend to dehydrate easily because of another medical issue that I wish the U.S. was as advanced in treating as the U.K.

I suppose that plenty of water is in my future!
