  • What do non-smoking mates think of your interest in cigars?

    I'm curious.

The reason I ask is that as time passes and as mates get to know me better, they seem to thoroughly approve of my cigar smoking in greater numbers. That may be because I'm more open about smoking cigars than I've ever been... but the typical reaction from male mates is to enjoy hearing about cigars, humidors and the like, and to tell me to go and enjoy one... or even to almost force me to light one up because they enjoy the aroma.

That sums up the inter-man reaction for me.

With women, I find they either really LOVE the aroma and stay slipstream with you... or they don't refer to the habit at all. I'm talking about female friends and relatives. They do not express disapproval... but they sort of walk past and don't notice or acknowledge that you have a fat one on.

I'll just remind you that the observations above are about people who don't smoke.

I really like it when male mates are interested in the fact that you smoke cigars... and when they approve. I see it as another seal of friendship.

My mates just accept it really. People who find out are always intrigued. One of my lady friends doesn't approve of it all, apparently it's like smoking a big turd.

Mostly my non smoking mates ignore my or make the odd quip about it, "Cancer sticks" etc.

My Dad though on the other hand, gave up cigs. a few years back and is really envious, but dare not try one in case it gets him back on the fags.

I don't speak to people who disapprove of me smoking, most of my friends were intrigued to hear about humidors and wanted to try them when they seen the beautiful look to a havana. Many have started .

My mates are ok , a few of the usual jokes about them but not bad. My wife encourages them, she says its the only thing that helps me relax on the way home from work

As a sideline, I'll add that I've been to the dentist today for emergency treatment for a collapsed filling and tooth. I've been loaded up with antibiotics and decided - for the first time ever - to light up a Cuban to see if it would relieve the pain. It is helping hugely to counteract the tooth spasms and has made me remember that cigars were smoked initially for pain relief.

So I would say if anyone is suddenly struck down by abscess pain, light up a fat one as it is really hepling me at the moment!

Strange. I find myself hoping for abcess pain!

that's very interesting. I've smoked cigars for many years and never knew that.

Mine all absolutely love it and always demand I bring "Cubans" with me whereever I go.

They all feasted on them when I had my 30th last year, with the aid of a great BOTL on here who sent me a couple of boxes of cheaper NCs to dish out.

Now they contribute to smoke Cubans! They bloody love chomping on a fat one (as Bry would say, camping it up in true Robusto style).

Most of my friends think I've more money than sense!

Posing with a fat one is all part of the grand art of reality flight and self-delusion. I cannot do without it.

It's this polite English Brown Dirt Cowboy's essential prop.
And I'll never be caught doing it with a roll-up.

I am now with my musician mates who think that smoking makes you look cool. I never used to think that!

My female friends tend to laugh--they think it a stereotypical male act. Something about phalluses and all that.

My male friends tend to ask me: "Can I have one?"

I'm stuffed with Punch d'Oro and it has significantly mollified my pain - along with the second Amoxycillin bomb - so I'm going to dress up and enjoy a Bolivar Royal Corona as a smoke chaser down in my shack as the sun is out and strong and I can feel it on my skin. Makes one Hemingway.

                              Revel in it.

I've always been a bit of an 'individual' shall we say, so it surprises none of the people I know. I revel in the attention it attracts tbh. I saw Dirk Benedict (Face from the A-team!) play Columbo on stage last night with a cigar (unlit...) and it certainly helped create a persona. I imagine many of us can empathise.
