  • The Last Station

"A historical drama that illustrates Russian author Leo Tolstoy's struggle to balance fame and wealth with his commitment to a life devoid of material things."

In the past year I have seen just one film Crazy Heart — Jeff Bridges deserved the academy award — before I finally went to see the movie "The Last Station" directed by Michael Hoffman, based on the historical fiction novel by Jay Parini. I enjoy history and imagination about what may have happened, and I also enjoy bio pics.

Though Christopher Plummer was terrific, Helen Mirren was superb and she should have won an academy award. At least she was nominated... and I have yet to see The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock.

Mirren and Plummer were so good that I teared at the end. Helen Mirren is one of the best.

The Blind Side is getting very mixed reviews here.

The Blind Side might have made a passable afternoon TV drama but it's crammed with awful stereotypes and as many daft set pieces as football plays.

        The Blind Side

I think I'll pass on The Blind Side, because too often Hollywood takes liberty and they base it on the True Story, which means a lot of bs.

Michael Oher, the black football player, said he wasn't pleased because he was not dumb about football and tactics at school.

I found the blind side very watchable, not award winning inho but a good warm your cockles story. Best films I've seen recently have to be Stutter Island and Precious good films and well written and directed in their own ways.

I agree Shutter Island and Precious were both really good films. However, I found the ending in Shutter Island to be too predictable.

One of the problems I have is reading too many reviews - only takes one bad one to put me off watching a film. I was going to see Shutter Island until my 19 year old daughter told me she enjoyed it - so I thought that there must be something wrong with it. Besides I always polish off a whole bag of Revels at the cinema - I'm keeping away.
I'm sure there are greater things in life than a fine cigar ........... but right now I can't think what they might be.

Life is what you make it, but with all the grief attached to life in general, it is worth taking a few minutes of your day to pause, reflect, recharge and puch on.......so off to St James and Fox's for a good old Monte later today.........
