Funeral For A Friend

Currently abroad for a relative's funeral.

A number of the male relatives, including me, smoked good ones off in honour of my brother in law who passed away last week. It was a fine moment, and a legitimate break-off from the food after the funeral.

I'd never done this before at a funeral but it seemed completely fitting knowing my brother in law as I do. He would have laughed and approved!

I may have enrolled a newbie for on here. Joe - on the left - is, I discovered, an aficionado who has no cigar-smoking mates in this town. He smokes alone in his man cave and has a tolerant wife. He has built up an enviably bulging humidor - a self-made coolidor, what's more - and knows so much about cigars here in the USA. He's kept me tooled up, and I will be reciprocating with some big Cuban cigar "books" when I get home.

I bumped into him in a media store in town here last night so we have arranged to blast off again this afternoon with my cousin. Joe will provide the quality brown cucumbers.

Connecting with a cigar man by chance is so often a positive connection and enabled me to smoke here. If I hadn't connected with him, I would not have blasted off - even though I wanted to.

Just wondered if anyone else had ever herfed one off at a funeral?

Mi amigo mejor, who was only two days younger then I, recently lost his battle with cancer. We got together only a few time each year (always on our birthdays in December) to eat, drink and enjoy some of my finest puros. He had given up smoking many years before, so it was the only time he allowed himself to indulge. He often commented during these times how relaxing it was to sit back with a fine puro.

After his funeral, I gave his younger brother a Trinidad Robusto Extra, one of our favorites, and suggested that he find a quite place and smoke it when the spirit moved him. Later that day after returning from the funeral, I sat alone and smoked one in honor of my amigo.

We've just regrouped here at the house to smoke some Gerkhas and talk and laugh. Many fine memories.

All new cigars to me. Mine was a Gherka Fuente, and it was a very good smoke.

Setting off back to the UK tomorrow. I hope my sister will be OK. She has good family and friends around her so there is always support nearby.

You are all very kind. Thank you.

It's strange to be attending a sad event that brings you all closer together. I have more direct blood relatives spread out the States than in the UK. At least I've persuaded my sister and my niece to fly over for two weeks in the Summer.

It was great to herf with a seasoned cigar man, and two fairly novice cigar relatives. One smoked his cigar like a big girl and we teased him to death about it afterwards!

I would have felt an idiot standing in the corner smoking a fat one, so I am pleased to have discovered a new BOTL buddy whom I will definitely stay in contact with.

Now it's time to fly home with bittersweet memories, but I'm more happy than sad - which is fine.

Hi Robusto you cant beat a good reunion like that at a funeral, and celebrate someones life with a cigar, I shall be doing just that this Thursday for my dear Mother-in-law. Will take a couple spare , better than to smoke alone.
