Won this recently and collected it today
The seller told me it was a bit smelly as it had been sitting in his garage for a while so I took a chance on it ........anyway its not that bad but anybody got any advice on how to do it?

Nice size humi, you say it smells? is it damp?? if it is you might have a problem with worping of the the wood, does it close nice & tight? last thing you need is a warped humi door.Originally posted by Giulio View Post

Then try it out with no cigars in it, see if it hold good humidity & also to see if the smell has gone, you want to be able to smell the spanish cedar not damp musty smell.

It smells musty and had a bit of mould on the bottom.
I used a damp cloth to wipe off the mould. The door is ok but its not a perfect fit all round and will need a bit of work to seal properly. Not sure yet best way to do that! Maybe a strip of draught excluder or similar.

That's amighty fine cabinet you got there Giulio, nice one
I think Monte has given some pretty good advice there, and I have another suggestion that may be of some extra help.
Try getting a pack of steel wool and lightly sand over the entire interior panels, (Using the roughest grade first and finest grade last) so that it's helping to take off any surface mould residue that may still be there and also it freshens up the smell of the spanish cedar.
When you have lightly sanded over each panel, wipe it down with a slightly damp towel, (A bar towel is just about perfect for this) to remove as much dust as possible each time, once that is done leave the humi door open to let the interior dry out again at room temperature.
This should replenish the surface of the cedar and also take away any mould residue that may still be on the surface of the cedar.
I've suggested using steel wool, because steel wool is kinder to a wood surface, whilst still being able to remove any dirt and/or mould residue that may still be there causing any bad smells, but also making the cedar wood naturaly porrous again so that it will hold the humidity a little better.
I'm not sure if this may be of any help or not, but I thought it would be worth mentioning at least as I've used steel wool many times before to clean up wood surfaces, particularly pool cues to remove any chalk dust from the surface of the shaft wood, and so I thought that perhaps the steel wool would come in handy to help clean up the interior of your new humidor

Use anti-mold distilled water to dampen the cloth and the cedar wood, not standard water.

It's actually a good thing that you mentioned about the door closure though on the cabinet, Giulio, because you've reminded me that I'll need to get something to line the top of my storador, so that I can get a good air tight closure on the bugger, so that I can then move onto the next part of the conversion.... getting a decent humidifier, to which I've already got a good one in mind (Thanks Monte for heads up on that one )

UPDATE
Well afte taking some of the advice you all had given I decided to wire wool the whole cabinet inside and then I filled up the thing with Baking powder and left it alone over the weekend.
Result is that the smell has gone and its starting to smell of cedar a bit
Now its just seasoning it and getting it full of cigars :PComment

I know that it's not easy to fill a large humirdor filled with stogies, but it's a task that is certainly worth going for and the end result is a reward worth waiting for
I'll be glad once I get a few more bits'n'bobs sorted out for my storador, before I fill the bugger up
