I am indeed a percussionist, one of two, and am awaiting promotion. I've been selected, done the command course, and in December this year I'll become a lance corporal; so my humi will have something special in it by then to celebrate; although I'll be in the middle of a 2 month support tour in Germany by then!
I think it'd be safe to say we play pretty much exactly the same as the Marines lmao. Although at work I play anything to classical overtures, through big band (classic and modern, Dordon Goodwin and the like), traditional 'dixie' jazz, even heavy rock like Muse! It's a varied job, and the travel I've enjoyed in the past 7 or 8 years has been beyond belief!
Deal was a tragedy; but it's amazing that many people still believe they're safe in the bands. The school in Deal was just one of many military musical units attacked, with all 3 arms of the service affected (Marines/Navy in Deal, RAF in Germany and Army bands attacked in Hyde park amongst other places).
If you're hankering after being able to sit out and listen to a military musical school, may I suggest moving to Twickenham lmao? A stone's throw from the Rugby stadium is the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. A stunning building where they train my corps, the Corps of Army Music (CAMus).
