I'm surprised the government arent encouraging smoking with the money they make on taxing it!

Indeed. This page has a great quote, unfortunately relating to 2002, but I'm sure it is still vaguely relevant now, what with tobacco taxation having increased since then.

"It is also hypocritical because it ignores the fact that through taxation smokers make a major contribution (over ?7 billion) to the economic health of the nation, far in excess of the cost (estimated to be ?1.5 billion) of treating so-called 'smoking-related diseases' on the NHS."

The government is hypercritical. On one hand they want us to smoke so they can make money from tobacco, but on the other hand they are making almost everywhere smoke free so its impossible to enjoy smoking.

They should just leave us alone and let us do what we want so long as we are not harming anyone else. If a room or establishment is well ventilated and specifically for smokers then there should be no problem. I know the government say staff shouldn't be exposed to secondhand smoke but its their choice if they want to work there. In my local pub every single member of staff smoke, most of the customers smoke and they have two rooms which could be used for smokers and non smokers but under this current law everyone has to go outside for absolutly no real reason.

Unfortunately we live in a nation where the majority is tarred with the same bush as the minority. All smokers are bad. Just like all Stella drinkers are yobs. Or hooded yougnsters are chavs. It's a funny thing how most people won't hesitate to break the speed limit, whether it's by 1mph or 10. Even though our government tells us it kills little children by the side of the road.

Yet if I chose to light a cigar in an out-door area infront of coffee place I'm asked to move on by the police because it's "anti social". What if I don't want to be social with a half brained twit drinking a mocha-latte-chickitito with a triple-double shot espresso served with room for cream?

Yes! My words are a bit OTT and not very diplomatic. But fuck it! Sometimes I don't want to be "PC". Sometimes I want to be me doing me type things.

Yes these laws can be a pain, i gave a work colleague a lift and when i pulled up at traffic lights i lit up a La Invicta petite corona, my colleague promptly moaned about we were at work, blah blah blah, at the next set of traffic lights i kicked him out.. Needelss to say i was on time for our meeting and he arrived almost an hour late having to get back to the office and get his own car.. Its my car, and i will smoke in it if i want too whether someone is with me during working hours or not.!! The governments an ass!

I personally agree with the ban. The ban was mainly passed to protect staff from second hand smoking. You might go to the pub-bar for a couple of hours, but there are people there working for 12-15 hours, inhaling smoke... not good.

I think the solution would be for a separate room, where no staff is allowed (ie you get your food/drinks from the bar yourself), or like the California where if the owners the only ones working in the property then they can get a smoking license.

As I've said before, I agree with RedRum.

I do believe certain establishments should be allowed to be exempt, but they have to fit certain criteria - i.e. specialist tobacconists etc, and staff shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the smoke.

I don't think it's fair to submit others to our second hand smoke, and certainly not horrid cigarette smoke at that!
