UK to review smoking ban

Cyprus was pretty good last year too. I don't know if there is a ban in effect. But, people seemed to have a very sensible attitude. No one smoked INSIDE in the eating areas of the bars and restaurants, confining smoking to the Al fresco areas. All very sensible and no butts all over the pavements. If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I think most british people these days just sit back and accept what the goverment is telling us! We should stand up and complain about things more often. If there were enough people that actively went about trying to get the government to relax the ban then maybe it would work, after all we are the ones who vote the government in.Smoke em if you've got em

Despite myself, I'm beginning to see the smoking ban as a good thing.
I would love to see dedicated smoking pubs, or spaces within pubs, re-established.
Trouble is that in the provinces, the smoking places will be cigarette dens full of chavs.
So I reckon I'll stay in my shack.

On the other hand, I also totally get wanting to hang out with like minded folk who do want this. Seems a middle ground could have been established, but politics, more often than not, is practiced with a club and not a scalpel.

I'm with Robusto. There has to be smoking and non smoking pubs as far as I'm concerned. At least you guys in England can smoke in ciagt shops. In Scotland, you can't smoke anywhere!!!No man has the right to fix the boundary of a nation.
No man has the right to say to his country, "Thus far shalt thou go and no further."

I am afraid it's set to get worse from what I hear. The only thing that may delay things is the election and then, hopefully the next Government will have more on their minds than to go after smoking but they will have a major revenue hole and I will bet that smokes and alcohol will get a bit tax hike as they can make it look as though they are saving us from ourselves and improving the health of the nation, while helping themselves to our money.
I too like being able to come home from the pub not reeking of cigarette smoke but I want a government and legislation that treats me as a grown up and allows me to make my own decisions in some respects.
It is downright crazy that a private club cannot have a designated smoking room with proper air conditioning etc where like minded consenting adults can smoke and make themselves smokey if that's their bag.
However, the word currently is that the approaching new legislation is going to be based on a Canadian model which is downright draconian. The Cigar stores we love so much for their displays and smells will become a memory. No tobacco products will be allowed on public display, they will look like Public Shops (many of you won't know what they are bu if you PM me I can give you a couple of addresses)
All cigarettes will be held below the counter. There is a fight on at the moment and we can only hope that the election holds this off.
Me I want me elected officials to focus on the child molesters, the pot holed roads, the lack of salt and the casino bankers making huge money with no downside because the tax payer knows they can't be allowed to go under rather than a few nice chaps enjoying the odd cigar.
There, I think that is that point covered, yup, that'll do it!Nic
