We're off to my in-laws in Derbyshire. They are lovely. In their 80s.

They are the kind of in-laws to die for. Neither of them passes judgement on anyone else, and they cause no shit within an extended family on my wife's side.

I've stopped giving a toss about whether my circle know I smoke, or see me at a cigar.

My in-laws know I like a cigar, but have only referred to it in an Aaaah! Bless! way with a friendly tap on my shoulder before. We didn't discuss it as such.

They have a large house with a good-sized conservatory. They have a Summer House in the garden where I could disappear to - but would return nad-less.

Neither of them has ever smoked, and they are very open-minded about my wife's siblings who do.

My question for you today is:

Should I ask if I can enjoy a cigar on Boxing Day with them?

If they dont smoke in their house themselves I personally would always consider it a no no to even ask.
So the only option would be the summer house or some other location outside.
Thats were the trouble could start. You pick a nice spot elsewhere, your going to be at least 45mins.
Such a prolonged absense could seem a bit rude. You'd have to pick your time and excuse yourself very carefully, You dont want to be ducking out while there's washing up to be done.
If they are as nice as you say they may take pity on you having to go out in the cold and say "why dont you just have it in here, just this once."
            Then BANG!.. your in.

There is a fine, quiet village pub across the road from them where I have slipped off for one in years gone by. It used to be so perfect and easy once...

                            Good lady.

I have to agree with the common consensus of opinion, ask your good lady and then take it from there.
