  • Thoughts on polite freebie etiquette?

Whilst smoking with friends this week something came up in conversation and it has stuck in my head. I was wondering what others thought?

There was an event this week in London, a launch for a new venture by a well known company with a strong internet presence. At this event a representative was present from one of my regular smoking establishments. He had brought along a selection (three different ones I think) of smaller Cuban smokes to be offered gratis at the event as they are associated with the new venture.

One person I know did the "British" thing and on first offering, early in the evening, refused the offer but said he would partake a little later. This is a very "me" thing to do and I so I totally understand it. You do not want to be the first to take the free offerings and certainly do not want to be greedy, you want others to get a look in, especially if they are less familiar with Cuban cigars.

I heard though that this person ended up getting no cigar and that another person (no stranger to Cuban smokes) left with three, one of each that was on offer.

This is what got me thinking. Am I wrong to think this rude and greedy or should I be less "British" and just think, hey, take everything that is on offer? Even if I was offered to take one of each I know I would probably refuse and just take one, it seem the "proper" thing to do.

I am often reminded I am very old fashioned in many of my views and it gets me in sticky situations sometimes but since this is vaguely cigar related, I thought I would use you lot as a sounding board.

I think you are bang on Big T, taking one to smoke with the group is one thing, taking three home another.... This is a perfect example of the greed of society today, youth especially they can not speak correctly or behave correctly and the morals of the younger generation... well better not say any more.....

right Big T I assume you?re talking about me???

you boys do like to gossip when you get together don't you?

I was at an event last week along with a friend, our own Nic Wing was also there and at a guess I would suggest is the aggrieved party that did not get his cigar, as he errrm turned the bloody thing down!

I on the other hand was chatting to the guy from La Casa along with my friend Andy and at the end of our chat he offered us both a cigar.

A little while later I was again chatting to him and he suggested I try the Bolivar he had also , so well I said thanks and did.

But if your that upset mate I will send you the cigar of your choice from my humi!!!!

Just for the record I also consumed 5 free beers and took home a free rubber stamp of an Angel ...

Given all the difficulty there has been over the years with defining the quintessential nature of 'Britishness' it is good to see that the matter has at last been resolved.

It's anything T. says it is.

As far as age goes, most of the people I come across who are really rude in shops etc., not saying thank-you to others are people over sixty - who really should know better. Maybe they are past caring. I don't know.
