Union Jack Smiley, GREAT. I did not know that was on the list!

    I took "British-ness" to be a generally understood c
olloquialism. I can take the task of defining it as my own if you wish, but I did not consider the use of that term as controversial.

"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"

                            You miss the point.

I do not agree that I cannot start a conversation without naming names. I can talk of scenarios without naming the parties involved. It is preferable in fact as you are more likely to receive an honest response. It was meant as a topic for conversation only as I wanted to gauge if my judgement on behaviour was atypical of most peoples.

I was not at the event and have no desire for the cigars but thanks for the kind offer. I am sorry you have resorted to calling names, such a reaction is uncalled for. Perhaps this belies a guilty conscience but I just wanted to judge others opinions in an anonymous conversation.

I don't think that Panto's behaviour was remotely rude.

My earlier point about Britishness is that it means very different things to different people. Given the scenario T. described I find it bizarre that this is described as un-British.

                              I find this thread un-British.
