  • The Pub Landlord

I'd like to declare, somewhat randomly, that this guy really amuses me. I have no idea if he is popular... or hated... or whatever.

So I seek the collective's view on The Pub Landlord out of interest.

I pawed and sweated on his two books in Waterstone's today. I almost splashed out. The next person along will deduce that.

Whilst i don't go out of my way to watch/read I have always very much enjoyed Al Murry's character. Occasionally has moments of genius.

Love him to bits....Al Murray's exceptionally quick at improvising when he's interacting with the audience...clever guy

We saw Richard Herring at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. He used to write for the Guv'nor but said he had to stop as the people they were talking the piss out off suddenly became the audience for the Guv.....the NIMBYs and racists were in the audience nodding along and agreeing with the Guv instead of laughing at the stereoptype he is....IYKWIM

It's astounding when the people being mocked become the ticket-buyers, Stevie. Shows how dumb they are!

The 'Lord bases a lot of his audience participation/victimisation on Dame Edna's stage schtick. Barry Humphries has been a genius at that for years, and there are clear parallels between Murray's books and the Landlord's. I'm sure that's why I'm taken by his stage antics.

I like to victimise in a caring way when I'm at the day job. Just like Murray's audience, the cleverer ones get it. The slowers don't.

I think I've posted about Murray before.
            Sorry. I'm smitten.

Al (he's really an Alaistair) is an exceptionally clever fella with a degree in History from Oxford and a pretty posh background (i think his dad was a british diplomat or something). He does a whole thing where anybody shouts out a country and he can instantly tell you when and where Britain beat them in a war. Stevieboy is right though.... some people miss the ironic Alf Garnett factor.

I have two Edna books that are never far from me.

This is a neat read, and you're never far from the humiliation of Madge Allsop... which I adore.

But I think THIS book has the edge on Gorgeous. It is full of rubber references, fabulous bedside montages, insight into her gay Kenny's life (or is he gay???) and the monster lesbian daughter Val-mae, and the most brilliantly set-up reality snaps. My favourite is the Fisherman's Facial. I'll say no more. If I can Google it, I'll be back.

This book has kept me happy periodically for years and years and years. They are both from the 80s, Stevie. I know Bazza is getting on a bit now, but there should be more releases, really.

I've put both Landlord books on the family's consciousness today.

A couple of years back Al Murray did a celebrity "an audience with" on ITV (I think) and that was an absolute hoot. He also did a short series called "Road to Berlin" on the Discovery channel that was semi-interesting and a bit of a giggle. He should never be let loose in an M4 Sherman again!

In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"
