  • Sitting in my smoke shack with the light on, Smokeshacklighting, really getting into my Trinidad Reyes, nifty little number (more of that later) and listening to a freeby copy of Tubular Bells which fell out of a Sunday newspaper some weeks ago. Funny how you forget all the fill in crappy bits over the years, could it be an omen?

Sorry sir CJ made me do it sir!

Just got to the Sir Vivian Stanshall bit, how wonderful is that, I had forgotten for a moment, Grand Piano, reed and pipe organ, two slightly distorted guitars!!!! lovely

    • Haven't listened to that for years, Nic!

I used to love Hergest Ridge and have it on vinyl. If I dug it out, I think I would be hugely disappointed.

Can't say the same for The Division Bell. Pink Floyd's last studio album from circa 1992. I listened to a lot of that in and out of work in the car today and it moves me a lot in places. I didn't know it at all but had to learn two tracks when I played in a Pink Floyd tribute band. We played The Division Bell and Take It Back (I think that's the correct title) as well as the big tunes from Dark Side and Wish. Also something called Arnold Lane, which was weird.

When I left that band, I was sick to death of Pink Floyd, but now I listen to all their stuff again from time to time. My favourite album is Wish You Were Here. I love lift doors and stuff sliding open. I must have been about sixteen when I bought that.

Some of Mike Oldfield's post-70's stuff is a bit soppy, I think. In a Northern club band, I used to have to play Carried Away By A Moonlight Shadow which I think is very, very gay. Especially on a noon and neet (night) (ie you played at lunchtime and in the evening) in a strippers' pub in Doncaster.

The boobs made the day, really.

Moonlight Shadow is Mike Oldfield's I Just Called To Say I Love You. Execrable.

Just returned home from a trip abroad where the DJ was raving about Viv Stanshall to find amazon have finally delivered Rawlingson End. Looking forward to a good listen tonight. And i've just ordered the book Ginger Geezer too.

No no, Very gay. I was chattin with Drewmidorm the other day about the Stanshall drunken ramble (a la Lord Clark) which was recorded for the original Tubular bells but only released on the box set. I have searched for it for years, I would give my right arm for a recording of it to complete my Stanshall archive and there is a limited edition Por Larranaga here for anyone who has the box set on vinyl and would lend it me to rip.

By the way a little musical history here...The Manor which was Branson's studio where Tubular Bells was recorded is now Le Manoir de Quatre Saison..

God I love Richard Thompson's guitar sound, try this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gLGQAhjPno
