  • The World Today

You know, chaps and chapettes, the more I sit down here and there, and light a stick, the more I think - the more I worry sometimes - about all that is going on in today's world.

Take any news bulletin, and it will feature uncertainty, concern of some form or other.

Is it me, or are we living in a new era, in which today's affairs matter? Or have affairs mattered throughout, and we are just becoming more aware of them?

What's on your mind at the moment, BOTL and SOTL? Indeed, should we just light a stick and chill, and do some yoga? Tell me, people.

There's a lot of bad stuff happening that the media tends to focus...Worrying about something never helps the situation, I believe if you feel strongly about an issue then do something about it.

I dont let bad news bother me, just light up and watch the world go by.

Always have my ears in Radio 4. Bit too knackered with my personal workload to concentrate fully at present.

The news seems a bit of an anticlimax currently after the Summer's duck house porn films.

Whisky, a little brainstorm (no offence intended to any epileptics out there)

It seems to me that nearly everyone wants others to conform to their beliefs. I mean that on every level from Osama Bin Laden to the old lady that thinks the kids shouldn't swear, from George Bush to the person who doesn't understand the drunk women rolling around on a saturday night outside whetherspoons....

Never Critacise a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.... then you can say what you like because you are a mile away and he will never catch you as he has no footwear....

Society is created by others who go before us and we are brought up to believe it is the correct way....

The only thing any of us can change is ourselves....

Life happens to you. You get much less say in it than you think....

Roll with the punches..... trying to makes sense of all this rubbish is what created god and religion. None of it makes sense... Its all a magnificent big messed up accident....

I love the uncertainty of it all.....

                Everyone should read....

I suppose what I'm saying in all these awful bumper sticker soundbites is
"light up the stogie and write off the world. It's all a big laugh.".

                    Hear, hear, chaps!

Sometimes, there is something almost - dare I say - sacred in the pursuit of a good stick... lighting it... and thinking that actually, this world is an odd one. And life continues! And thank goodness we don't have to dwell on the doom and gloom of it all, 24/7!

                    Cheers everyone

That's even better that "watching the world turn round and round."

I see you recognize that little diddy senor Yankee, even though ol' TJ mangled the lyrics a wee bit. Sorry John, wherever you may be tonight

I think it's always been the same tbh. It's just that we have the 24 hour news culture now, and it isn't 'news' unless it's something bad happening.

This article from Simon Jenkins in The Guardian summed it up quite well I thought. No matter how cynical you are of the media, it will have some effect upon your view of reality. If you're told your country/neighbourhood/etc. is rubbish, sooner or later you'll start believing it.

I also read somewhere that there's an interesting correlation between the fact that English-speaking countries have higher levels of depression than others, and the person who mentioned it suggested that it might have something to do with the materialistic lifestyle and constant bombardment with advertising.

I'm planning to leave the country. At least it will be warmer where I go.

I would agree entirely... I just haven't quite managed to get that really nice 60ft yacht I want. Once I've got that I can contentedly sit back and desire little more than: fine cigars, good whisky, top rum, well-tailored clothes, expensive watches and fast cars...
