  • Time for an update: Learned something interesting the other week, when BPC, that I got out of before drilling commenced in Dec, closed at 2.1p on the Fri & opened at 0.67p on Mon, on news of a duster. Technically they had some some oil but not in commercial quantities. The learning point was stop losses didn't work, as the best price you could have got was 0.67p. If you're avge was around 2-2.5p you might have been better off holding & waiting for it it to rise due to production increasing at their other fields e.g. 1.5-2p in a year or two or maybe they crash & burn.

Now that was AIM & I have seen £2k of my paper profit disappear in a morning on VAL but at least stop loss would have been activated as it happened during opening hrs ( I had removed my stop loss about a week before!) but does any one know if drops between closing & opening can happen on the main markets?

    SNG is creeping up £4k ahead there, 4D + 35%, HE1 +4%, TRX +49%, just down on GGP -18%.

I opened a SIPP so I could take advantage of the recent drop in GGP & have improved my overall avge from -26%, very confident that'll come back by the summer & could be back to 33p by Chrimbo.

Yes drops can easily happen between opening and closing, well technically not but as far as impact they have. The new price can be virtually instantly set these days at opening so it will drop to the new price not slide down to it which will kick in the stop loss order when it first can. Often when the full loss has already happened (and often frustratingly at the trough). Stop loss limit orders are a way to try to avoid this.

Generally stop loss orders don’t actually offer much security and definitely not what they seem to, and can really limit profits if set wrong or the market lines up with the arbitrary figures you have to set with them.

Cheers for the tips, better than learning the hard way!

        • I've taken a small punt on brewdog... They are pre IPO at the moment and have a few perks such as 10% off online and pub with a free beer for your bday

this is a link if anyone's interested

          • Cheers Shamz, I took a look & it sounds interesting. That might be one IPO that doesn't drop SP on launch but that depends on when price they launch at. I'll wait until a month after the launch & see how it's doing then. Nice to be invested in a company I can support, quite keen on the the Clockwork Tangerine, after McDee introduced me to it, goes rather nicely with a fine Havana IMHO..

              • I thought the same with naked wines and theyve jumped 104%. This also sounds like a good one. Cheers!

                • I guess everyone's portfolio is bleeding nicely about now! Good opportunity to buy in? I do need to diversify my portfolio some. So will be looking to buy some different stocks from Monday. I'm in for the long haul.

March is predictably brutal. Good buying opportunity.

                      • My PF was bleeding as well. Took the opportunity to buy some more AB InBev and Apple as they were quite cheap and I already have a position in both

You're not kidding, been hit hard this month. Just sold most of my 4D Pharma stock, it's been floating down & since going on the NASDQ getting worse. Sold to take a profit, will probably buy back in when things have calmed down & SP rising again.
Just found a new stock last week, sure some of you will have heard of it FUM? Amongst other medications it's discovered by serendipity, a gel that will work x6 faster than Viagra, headlined in the Sun as 'Stiffy in a Jiffy'. The best news is it is been deemed a medical device rather than a medicine & has been approved by the EU to be sold Over the Counter (OTC). The potential for this is huge for sure, cheaper & quicker than the pills, can work on those who couldn't take or afford the pills & lads on a Sat night, who want to impress after 14 lagers & a packet of crisps! There is a 6month trial set to prove it remains effective but if it passes that, this really could be a stand out success. I am in, anyone else taken a stand?

Photographic evidence is absolutely NOT necessary!
