• CAD During Lockdown - Watching my weight

During these times whilst more of us are confined at home, i have taken tidying up my catalogue of cigars, but also at the same time weighing my cigars using a small set of Barista scales (0.1g) accuracy. What amazes me is within batches of the same cigars how much weight difference there can be. I know cigars are a handmade product and on the one hand its pretty amazing in that respect the weights are so close.

But, in the case for example 9 Medio Siglo tubos all purchased from same retailer the range of weights for individual cigars was
Box1 10.3;10.3;10.0
Box2 10.7;10.7;10.4
Box3 13.7;13.6;13.1

From 10.0g to 13.7g That is quite a range considering their size. Are there any weight figures published by manufacturers or collectors on the average weight for particular marques of cigars, and would that form a basis for telling which are the potentially better/worse cigars within a batch by not only the look and feel but also individual weights? I suppose I am asking the question, is the weight of a cigar for a given marque a good indicator for how well or not the cigar will be?

Now there's a challenge, my scales go to 0.01g, no idea why unless they're for weighing cocaine. You obviously have too much time on your hands but seriously its fascinating and I can't remember it coming up before.

http://www.cigars-review.org/Cohiba-Lanceros.htm but they dont have medio siglo. Not sure where they get weights from though... expect Cuba wont publish official weight!

Question is ... do they taste the same, burn the same time?

What are the box codes? And let the experiment begin!
.--
I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

Might be interesting to smoke the two with the biggest difference and see how the draw, burn and smoke time compare [emoji848] I've noticed before that there can be a visible range in RG of the same cigar from the same box. Did the 13.7g look the same as the 10g?

That’s a huge difference! I’ve seen a list of weights somewhere but I can’t remember where.

I've done this before when I was playing around with different humidity settings, there are huge variances. Think I have a spreadsheet somewhere I'll try and dig out later

That would be useful - I was going to start a smoking diary for a few marques and recording weight at smoking time against draw, overall enjoyment, smoking time etc... just curious if there is that correlation.....
I?m sure SimonBolivar keeps a comprehensive smoking diary - now does it include weight?

So according to this your petit Robusto should weight about 10 grams, this would suggest the 3rd set all weighing over 13 is dramatically over filled. I’d be interested to hear how they all smoke.

Cheers Alex, that was what I was indirectly alluding to, what’s over and underfilled and how they smoke. I’ll report back when I do

interesting point on CCW states the following regarding official weights

The official cigar weights tend to be on the low side of actual cigar weights.”

Absolutely, interesting line about the weights you’ve spotted there. I missed that bit. To mean out by 30% though seems unlikely, By the book the third batch must be considered overfilled albeit they may actually be a better smoke

looking forward to the results of this one.

Sometimes I can actually tell that the cigars in a box are different weights. There's often a couple of sticks that are much heftier when the rest.
The thing to remember though is that a box can be made up of 25 sticks made by 25 different rollers as it's the wrapper colour that defines the composition of a box and each roller will have different techniques

I think that?s a given with many boxes Steve, or so it appears to be. But in your experience do the heavier ones smoke better or are they invariably plugged?

I find the heavier ones are almost always bunched too tight and won't draw well at all.
It's fine if you're in a shop and feeling the sticks for hard spots....you just don't buy those ones but when they turn up in a box you've bought over the net, you're kind of screwed
