Smoke Extraction Cheap DIY Jobbie ;)

I’ve finally had enough of killing myself for my job and decided to kill myself on my days off – installing an extractor fan, so I can kill myself with cigars! (indoors)

Sorry about the killing myself part, it’s a busy time of year for everyone but you guys seem to have a cigar on a regular basis lol.
Me, I come home from work at different times every day from 1pm to 11 pm and more recently my days off are mid-week – where I tent to instantly sleep to ready myself for my shifts.

So I’ve had enough and installing a fan, where i can at least enjoy a cigar indoors after a shift.

I’ve not the biggest budget and in an attempt to join back in here, when im not working or sleeping. Ill add the project here.

Any help here would be appreciated, im not the world’s best DIYer �� even if its just support and sympathy!

Im installing this fan in well neglected back door entrance to my kitchen/home office, so ill tart the space up as I progress. Im finishing off a new W/C install next to it and use what I have left over.

Ive mixed the numbers up!

Fan:8" Hyper Fan - 710 CFM - 2.700 (CF)
Ill be smoking about 6' away from fan - so should be more than enough CFM than i need. Area is roughly 12x15x8

It should look clean and fresh - all boxed off with remnants:

The idea is... while doing this, ill forget about work and Christmas. it will look ugly as sin but with the remnants of my WC refurb (PVC) it should box off a bit nicer and theoretically - ill be able to have a cigar anytime, hassle free and just need to spray some air fresh afterwards.

Fan wires will plug into a trunked off - smart plug "hey google - have a cigar" prrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Total cost is about ?200

Hm... I have by no means any expertise in this, but my gut feeling is that it would take a lot more to keep a room smoke free. By the time it reaches the fan, I would guess a good amount of smoke already attached on the walls and furniture.

Sounds like an exciting project though and I hope I am wrong. [emoji5]

I'm in a similar boat in that I don't have anywhere indoors to light up a cigar. Costs a fortune in lounges.

i know what you mean but... ill only be sitting about 6 feet away from the fan and its in direct line of sight sight. its quite powerfull (ive seen them in operation) and as nothing is in the way of me and the fan - in theory! the smoke shold pretty much vent out instantly. obv it will leave behind a slight smell etc.

Imagine smoking beside 3or4 standard bathroom extractors

if it doesent work as well as i hope, she can use it for when dryer is on or shes burnt the dinner - currently no kitchen exctractror in place

for a larger CFM fan id need to remove the whole "above door" part - dont know what its called lol

There's often a fan pushing the air to the extractor in most lounges and builds on here. Got to create a flow!

Not fool proof however.

There are also devices that claim to clear the smell. Like the old Csonka air purifier. There's are some others I remember folk here mentioning in their builds.. but I don't recall those.

Negative pressure should give quite a big impact from the fan but it definitely won?t take it all. That plus a decent air purifier (can often pick them up second hand reasonably priced off eBay and get new filters for them) and it should cover you pretty well. I like the blueair ones with their smokestop filter.

I've been to Club Macanudo in New York and you can see their extraction system blow the smoke across the room at just above head height. Its efficient but you can still smell smoke.

When I built my Summerhouse I worked on the principle of having airflow across the room. I use a floorstanding air purifier, which is sited diagonally opposite the extractor fan. The air out of the purifier blows upwards in the direction of the extractor. You can see the smoke move head height towards the extractor.
It works quite well and gets rid of most if not all the smoke. The trick as [MENTION=13402615]PeeJay[/MENTION] says is to create airflow across the room

Well I’m nearly finished, I didn’t quite get the time I had hoped and its unfinished, had to finish the WC and the detailing took forever. I’ve still to box the whole fan off and make a door for the fan when not in use. the vent cover is an thought i didnt put much thought onto - you pretty much need the fan clear when in use.

It’s a good bit noisier with the ducting on but it works – as well as id hoped. Ill try get a video of a smoke ring or something escaping through the fan.

Ugly as sin (for now) but at least I can now smoke indoors!

And if it dosent work out in the long run i,e smell / wife still cries .... ah well, sure else was i doing with my time off

i could only find the foil version of acoustic and i went for the rubberised stuff instead. everything was bought online, we have nothing local! once its boxed off it should quieten down a bit – but for the time ill be using it its not a problem ��

yes boxing it in should dampen it right down. End of the day i wouldnt be worrying if i could have a smoke in the warm and dry this time of year. I resorted to buying a heater for the garage yesterday. And like i say when i get my shed together ill be well sorted! actually cant wait i think ill make a start this weekend. be summer by the time i get it sorted at the rate im going.
