not seen the new one, so can't comment.

On the whole, I think his films are great (including Jackie Brown and Grindhouse/Deathproof). I think he's one of the few Hollywood directors who can get away with directing a film the way he wants. He doesnt seem to try to force a comercial hit by toning down violence/sex/bad language/etc.

I have just been to see Inglorious Barterds tonight. I enjoyed it but to enjoy it i think you must accept the following:

Its just another Quentin Tarantino film.

Whilst enjoyable and tongue in cheek, it continues to show a lack of development in Tarantino as a director. Its still very stylistic with influences from 60s and 70s films. Its still full of gratuitous, juvenile violence. Lets just say that if you didn't know it was directed by him, you'd guess it in a few minutes.
This can be seen in both positive and negative light. Some would say that Tarantino is losing ability to come up with new styles or methods, but others would say that he has his own trademark style which only he can produce.

Personally, any film directed by him, i will view with the mind that its likely to be a violent film, with 60s influence, with a lot of tongue in cheek humour. That way i can just enjoy it without disappointment

I don't see him ever directing an art house film, or anything particularly "break through". Just fun, enjoyable "beer and pizza" films.

I think Monkey makes a good point. A Tarantino film is exactly what you expect it to be now, a Tarantino film!

He has got a good thing going for himself in that he directs/writes the same style of film that people enjoy. The bad side to that is as Monkey says he has not developed much at all. However, there is the chance that by changing style he would not be very good at it.

Guy Ritchie is a director who did well in his first couple of films which were in effect the same (trying to copy QT), then when he tried something else they were huge flops.

I guess it's just his style and as long as it works, why change?

well I dont really care if he is developing as a director or whatever all I care about is that I enjoy the movie, and I saw his new one on Monday and thought it was fantastic... well worth the money

I certainly agree with this Paulie. It would be a shame to see him putting out awful films just for the sake of trying to win respect as a multi talented director.

I think he already has the respect of his peers. I imagine history will record him as genre defining writer/director and an all time great.

I thought his films were a complete rip off of the Blaxploitation films of the 70s, I thought that was a dead given to be honest.
I agree with the beer and pizza comment.

Also, I think his new film is a tad offensive, there is people still alive from those days, I wonder what Germans think of the film and I wonder how a film would be percieved if it starred heroic North Koreans bowling about killing tobbacco chewing Republicans, it wouldnt happen.
Think about that one though.

No wonder the bloody kids thses days are loons, what, with the music and films that they watch.

My friend whose opinion on films I trust has seen this latest one and she gives it a BIG thumbs up, so I'm probably going to love it. I do like his other stuff, mainly because I am partial to really violent films. It's what he does, and he does it well IMO.
