I?ve just ordered a Samsung 65q9FN to replace my Panasonic plasma as it?s come to the end of its life. 5 year warranty thrown in as well. Out of the box almost no TV is as it should be - every batch of leds etc will vary from panel to panel so to expect perfect consistency throughout isn?t really reasonable. TV presets are also shockingly turd!

If you?re into your AV gear and want the most out of it, I?d strongly recommend getting a professional in to calibrate the tv to ISF standards. The difference between my out of the box Panny VT60 to after it was calibrated was night and day with the colours looking amazingly natural and realistic. Money very well spent, even if you?re eyes are ?mature? [emoji23]

    Just my tuppence!

The repair shop man mumbled something about a regulator. I?ll get more info when I pick it up.

That's ringing true, I could almost bet money on it being a power regulator and a few caps. Probably less than ?10 in parts for someone handy with a meter and a soldering iron.

I have a Q9FN, simply an amazing TV. I wont buy an OLED until burn in is covered under warranty. All TVs need calibrating when you get them anyway, what you see in the shop are the super saturated demo modes designed to pull in the masses.

Yes TV's need calibrating... But it's not just that simple. Interpolation engines are not all created equally, colour gamut and black level are not created equally.

If you get a chance to watch a setup Panasonic EZ1000, I find the difference staggering to almost anything else on the market due almost entirely to their Hexa Chroma Drive Pro. Pannels are getting increasingly similar and harder to distinguish, but the tech that drives the panels can be so very different.

Not really, but on the AV type forums they go very deep on all this technical stuff. Personally 90% of the time I cant see the differences they are saying exist.

What, calibration? To be fair most people don?t just go with the plug and play option which I completely understand. It?s us nerds that do it. If you want to calibrate yourself, you could find someone?s settings online but given the panels are all slightly different, it won?t be as good as a professional calibration with the correct equipment measuring colour reproduction on the screen.

I just went into the menu options and picked the picture setting I liked the look of best which I think was 'movie'

You used to be able to buy something that you put on your screen and you adjusted the colours until they matched.

Most of the review sites seem to start at the movie preset, its often the most realistic out of the box.
