  • Do you smoke?

    Dr.: Do you smoke?
    Me: Not often enough.
Dr.: (Spiel about cancer and how to get help to quit smoking)

So as you may have gathered I don't smoke as much as I'd like. So perhaps a stick every few weeks in winter and 2 or 3 during nice weather. On average.

Do you say yes or no to the doctor?

She examined my mouth, gums etc and have me the all clear. But then went into the obligatory speech.

What about health insurance? I guess have to say yes. And suffer the penalty.

I expect there is a risk or oral issues.

I guess I'll die of diesel fumes inhalation before the Cubans get me. But who knows...

    B.

I can remember a nurse asking me if I'd considered giving up smoking and looking surprised when I said that I had only just started. Yes oral health is our big issue so advise your dentist so that they can be aware and extra vigilant. As far as the health insurance goes, it should only be an issue if you change insurers. You don't notify your insurer if you put on weight or drink too much after all.

I typically just say no to be honest - I don't smoke even enough cigars to justify the judgement/lectures!

        Do you smoke?

Well I gave up cigarette smoking seven years ago now....I find it easier to just say no, unless I happen to be smoking a cigar at the time [emoji38]

I had a minor operation yesterday & the nurse doing the pre op on Friday gave me a lecture when I said I smoke cigars occasionally. So when they asked again before the op I just said no. There?s no point getting a lecture every time. The health police are really no fun at all.

I take it all with a pinch of salt, life is ying and yang, yes I smoke cigars and a pipe and enjoy a drink, but eat healthily and keep relatively active. The oldest person recorded Jeanne calment stopped smoking at 96 lol and yes she did inhale. I find it laughable on the very odd occasions over the years I have seen health workers invariable I have been in better condition than they are yet in there sometimes overweight state they have remarked on my drinking or smoking.

I don't bother even telling the doctor, they know I gave up fags nearly 30 years ago (still at the same practice), and all they have ever asked is, "still off the cigarettes?" To which I answer truthfully, yes.

I just say no. Also on the idea of health, my great grandad smoked 100 a day for most of his life from his teens until his 90's, he ate a full English most days I can remember and also worked down the mines and inhaled more coal dust than I have probably ever shovelled on a fire.

My uncle bill never smoked, ate extremely healthy food and worked a much more health-friendly delivery job.. Yet he died 26 years younger from an unexpected edema of the aorta.

I have confessed to an occasional cigar... but my GP looks at me in that manner which says 'ok.... you shouldnt but there are so many other things you shouldnt.... keep it sensible and level headed....' thank fully stops short of the lecture.

I'm actually more concerned about insurance costs and will they pay out.

Why aren't all the folks living healthy lifestyles all living well beyond the scope of those who do not. There's no profit in this observation.

May your genes copy your great grandads.

You only need to worry if you die from a smoking related illness. Otherwise they'll never know. Or if it's health insurance. The same applies apart from replace die with suffer from.

Most forms ask how many you smoke per day/month. I think I smoke anything from 1 per every 2-4 weeks, wonder how a Dr would respond to that as most of us only smoke occasionally

im with the majority. i packed the cigs in a few years ago when i moved to vaping - couldn't and wouldn't have done/do it without the vape

im lucky if i get 2 cigars a month, i even carry 2 mini cubans with me at work and never get to them!

i consider myself a non smoker
