I went down this route a couple of years ago. Tried a few capsule coffees and decided that they weren't for us. Spoke to a good mate who had a decent coffee maker. Cost just shy of ?400. The next model up was ?1K. Purchased ours and its great. Wouldn't want to go to any other coffee now for at home. Another mate who is a bit flush with cash purchased the ?1K model. But it came with white glove service. So you order the machine, it gets delivered by a man. Who then stays with you all day if needed to show you how to make a decent cup of coffee and will show you how to decide the time of grinding, and brew time etc. A bit of overkill for me but if you have the money, why not

I too have a friend with the ?1000 model but he did win the lottery. Coffee is no better than mine though.

I picked up a refurbished Delonghi bean to cup machine about a year ago. Cost roughly ?150. It makes a really good cup of coffee. The enjoyment for me is going around looking for good wholebeans from different places, sort of similar to finding good cigars. The pod system is convenient and the coffee isn't too bad. If you can find the pods at a good price, buy loads, you will save money in the long run as they can be expensive at times.

We've got a magimix l'expresso which makes real espresso and filter but recently bought a Krups Nespresso.

I prefer the coffee I get from grinding beans fresh, the Nespresso can't compete in this aspect - but only use this at weekends as the Nespresso machine is less faff in the mornings.

I feel there's a significant difference in taste and quality of the coffee from the 2 machines - 'real' espresso always wins, but the convenience aspect of Nespresso is a bonus.

As Shaun mentioned the recycling aspect which was an issue for me as well, used pods can be bagged up and sent to Nespresso free of charge or emptied, rinsed and put in plastic recycling.

There are also companies that use cornstarch capsules which can go straight in the compost/food waste bin. Volcano coffee are one of these (but v expensive!) or The Foodies Larder on Amazon (less expensive).

The issue with cornstarch capsules is that the machine needs heating through and fiddling with to extract a good cup, so the convenience aspect is somewhat lost.

Lots of other companies selling compatible capsules on Amazon too.

Not a bad price for an espresso machine with frothing feature too.

We got a Tassimo about 2 years ago for ?60.

Not to bad but I don’t drink a lot of coffee. We buy the pods from Costco as it’s way cheaper than buying them from the supermarket

These arrived today and having tried them I can highly recommend. One of the best capsules I've had since buying the machine.

Plastic or metal capsules. Because my Nespresso has a powered mechanism rather than the manual I've had bad experiences with it crushing plastic capsules.

PeeJay plastic, but very sturdy. No give when squeezed between my finger and thumb.
