    Hi Robusto, Smokiejoe,

We have lots in common...I've also got a dog and live near beaches! In my case the dog is a Springer Spaniel...maddest dog I ever had. And the smelliest. Why go around something disgusting when you can go through it? She's only 3yrs old, and mad as a box of frogs. We bought her when we just had the one kid under 5, and now we have another we find it really difficult getting the time to walk her enough. She'll also eat anything/everything...I have to walk her early (about 6a.m.) across the fields before I do my 50mile commute to Edinburgh - and believe me, it's no fun in the pouring rain and dark, trying to wrestle a decomposing crow from her mouth! They never mention that in Country Life, do they?

My local beaches are a long way from Devon/Dover! I've got at least 4 really nice beaches about 10-20 minutes drive away...places like Coldingham, Spittal, Scremerston and Goswick. Goswick is great...you walk along a huge deserted beach with Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and Bamburgh Castle in view...fantastic! Funny - I've never smoked a cigar on the beaches there...but now you've put the idea in my head....

    Take care lads,

    Wildwood

LOL,labradors are nice we had two dogs one was a springer and other was a red setter,we had to get rid of the red setter because he was so camp,he had a thing for the springers backside,he wouldnt stop trying to ride him,so had to go as it was starting to be a joke as we couldnt stop him, and everytime the setter came near him the springer would try and weld his ass to the floor.i dunno dogs eh,,of coarse it was the springer who ate my lamb joint and pork chops by the way.

Yeah, I can well believe it was a Springer! Don't quite know how I can lose my temper so much with her, and yet still think the world of her...several times my wife has suggested that she should go (the dog not the wife!) but I couldn't do that. The wife, maybe!

She is fascinated by cigar smoke, of course...maybe that's why! Pretty good company when I light up on the patio... Plus, I can't smell her when I light up, which is when she is at her best...

                          Hi Smokiejoe,

Long story...apols in advance...and I'm still not sure whether it's funny or not...but here goes:

About 12/13 years ago, when my youngest daughter was about 10, she and a friend went for a walk with our black lab-type mongrel called Phoebe. They went to Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park in Edinburgh, not far from where we lived at the time. If you know the park, it has some big hills and cliffs in it. Anyway, they took a path that some clever dick had removed the "No entrance" sign from...and it led them across the top of a very crumbly set of cliffs. My daughters friend lost a shoe down the cliff (how, I don't know!), and went to get it..and got stuck. My daughter went down to help her and got stuck herself. They screamed and shouted and a guy heard, clambered up to them and made sure they didn't fall off...but couldn't actually get them down.

First I heard of it was a phone call from the Park police (it has it's own force!). I ran up to the park in a panic, only to see a huge crowd, 2 fire engines and a fire tender, 3 police cars and a Mountain Rescue van. I almost s*at myself!

The mountain rescue guys were in the process of getting them down. When my daughter was rescued, and safe and sound, one of the Rescue guys came up to me and asked me if it was my dog. I said yes, not knowing what to expect. "You got a really good dog there" he said. Apparently, the dog never left the girls at all, and went down to where they were and stayed right by them. The guy then said the only problem was that they had to cut away a lot of gorse and other bushes to get to where the girls were stuck...and every time they threw the sticks away, Phoebe would go and retrieve them and bring them back, wagging her tail!! A great game for her, but not really what you want when you are trying to rescue two very upset and in danger kids!

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry! Still don't really...kids and dogs, a lethal combo, probably shortened my life expectancy by some years!
