Just thought, after reading a post about hardware in the New in the Post thread, that it might be an idea to have a thread to discuss what cameras we've got (and all other things camera). Given our lust for cigar porn, I thought it'd be nice to see the equipment.
I'll start off.
I've got an Olympus ? 1030SW:
I bought it primarily because I do a lot of stuff in conditions that most cameras don't like. I ski a lot - cold and wet aren't usually the friends of an electronic gadget... There is also the chance the I could land on it quite hard if I messed something up... I also sail quite a lot - again, water, not good. So, a camera that is water-proof, shock-proof, crush-proof and freeze-proof was ideal!
10.1MP - personally, selling the things most days, I wouldn't want anymore MPs on a compact. I'm not going to use the images for posters, so I don't need anymore size anyway, and I want to avoid the 'noise' that often accompanies higher MP pictures on compact cameras (the lense and capturing device aren't usually up to it).
It's proved to be very good for cigar shots as well as sports. Three different macro settings are perfect for different shots. I've got the 'long-range' macro for box shots, super-macro for close ups of cigars, bands and ash pictures, and a super-macro LED mode - which is great! The LED mode uses an LED light to light up an object for a macro shot, thus avoiding the bright/white areas were the flash to be used. It is very good actually, see below, a super-macro LED shot when it was almost pitch black... see the lack of overly bright spots - it provides quite a pleasant, soft lighting.
With the water-proof ability, it is also great for apres-ski in the bar. At about 2am, you'll always have someone who doesn't believe the camera is water-proof... So, I take a photo of the inside of their drink!
What's your weapon of choice then people?
