  • Any Budding Chess Players?

Hi Folks, 20yrs ago I picked up my first computer chess board & used to play for 2-3hrs a day on the rig. I got to a reasonable level but then struggled to find someone to play with. I did find a club in my local town & managed a win & a draw on my first evening but unfortunately it wasn't on a night I could make regularly.
After playing a few games on our recent cruise with Alex, a City banker; I searched out for a platform we could play on together - whereever we are based.

Searching the net I discovered Chess.Com & I am busy getting back in the game. I am currently having programmed lessons & tactic session & finally getting a little skill back. But of course it's more fun playing someone & I wondered if anyone else is on this site already? If so my username is SBolivar, please send me a challenge. I am only really an advanced beginner but will make several moves day. And perhaps we can organise a skype session & have a cigar & play a game!

Anyone who is interested but not a member yet, it's free to sign up, although you will get constant adverts to sign up for premium services, it's not necessary to play with the computer or friends.

It’s funny you should bring this up, I downloaded a chess tactics app just last week with the intention of getting back into it. I am in a similar situation to you in that I used to play quite a bit verses a computer some years back and apparently got up to a ELO rating of around 1500 but I’ve forgotten almost all of what I knew about opening strategy and would expect to be firmly in the beginner category now. I’ll take at look at chess.com and hope we can organise a game at some point. As for Skype and a cigar, I only smoke outside and it’s snowing at the moment so that may be one to think about in the summer.

Hi Alex, Many thanks for your swift reply. Sure I can wait until the weather improves for a mutual smoke & game but happy to play a few games now so by Easter we can enjoy a better game, in some spring sunshine & less basic mistakes. My current score is around 1200 & 700+ for tactics.

I almost got marched off the premises one morning about 8 years ago because we were discussing the nights moves with the guys in the office at work over morning coffee. The site was redhotpawn.com

I've never been into chess strategy and openings. Never read anything about tactics etc. Lost patience with it.

I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

Know what you mean Habanos, I used to see moves in my sleep! But I get lost when trying to read chess books & pages of annotations. My main object is to have a bit of intellectual stimulation & avoid losing any pieces for nothing. Have ago on Chess.Com, be happy to give you a game.

That reminds me of when Tetris first came out, I used to lay in the dark seeing those damned blocks falling!
