  • What do you (or did you) do?

I was having a conversation with a friend who had the (controversial?) opinion that cigar smoking is reserved for the elite in society. I strongly disagreed with this for numerous reasons, but it did get me wondering what everyone's profession is/was on here?

As for me, I was a professional actor for some years (West End/Touring musicals mainly) before turning my hand to producing. I was able to book and work with some great 'household' names for a tour that lasted for two years on and off. Unfortunately, producing is not a secure profession (a colleague used to say that you should have ?20K in reserve that you don't mind losing at any one time).

I now work as a freelance artistic consultant, something that I have been doing on and off for the past ten years but have recently made it my sole source of income.

I hope this isn't too personal a topic; it isn't intended as such. I am interested in hearing what other people on the forum do and how that fits around (!) this hobby.

Administrative drone with NHS, not in the upper management levels either all ward level. Though if an elite of society needs someone to maintain their diary/calendar I offer competitive rates.

I teach. Unlikely to ever propel me into the upper echelons of society!

I sell comic books during the day and I have sold a few high end books to the elite. In my free time I sell the stuff I have amassed over the years (comics, art, retro video games) and make enough money off that to feed my cigar addiction.

A working man's puro is something to be.

                        Elite? If only...

Ever since Ricky Bobby left to join the Coros on their journey across the dark sea of awareness, I perform as the caretake of the familia Coro hacienda in Som, MX. Hopefully, one day I'll be asked to join them again as they explore the second and third rings of power.

In exchange, I am permitted to enjoy don TJ's massive unit and all it holds.

Not bad work if you can get it...but hardly what I'd classify as "elite.

Definitely not in the elite. I run a group of companies that includes a telecoms call centre business, a commercial utilities broker and management consultancy business.

The combination of those and a couple of angel investments keeps me busy enough. I'm also chair of the Trustees for a small charity, probably the most rewarding thing that I do.

well... there is a day job of recruiting IT Directors, then the real work starts as 50% of chief cook and bottle washer and all other jobs at home! a way short of the social or liberal elite!
