• Android handset recommendations wanted

Chaps,

I've been using iOS since the first iPhone was launched back in 2007 but am thinking of making the switch to Android.

I don't want to spend a fortune on a handset - I'm done with expensive 'premium' phones. I'm quite tempted by the Nokia 6 at ?229.99 but the UK release date is yet to be announced.

Main uses are taking photos/videos/browsing. I rarely watch film/tv on a handheld device but do listen to music, a bit of gaming when time allows.

What handset do you all use and do you recommend it?

I use an LG G3. It's a few years old now but I like it. The brand is certainly good quality and worth looking into IMO.

I am an iPhone user as well but the Samsung phones look good especially if you have one of their TVs

I've got a (now aged) Sony Z2 which is still serving me well though getting a little worn around the edges. It still takes superb photos, has expandable memory but most importantly for me is that it is 'waterproof' and was one of the first tested, water resistant phones on the market.

HTC all the way for me!

Last phone was over 2 years old, so I have just purchased the HTC 10, it's on the pricey side, albeit less than the equivalent iPhone/Samsung.

I love it - mainly use it for music/streaming/browsing. The camera isn't quite as good as the brands I just mentioned, but it depends how important that is to you. If you care about sound quality this is the one for you. It gives you a little test before you can listen on headphones to generate a personalised EQ/boost for music listening

EDIT: Just noticed you didn't want an expensive one. I would still recommend HTC 10 tbf, but their cheaper offerings are meant to be very good for the price point, I think it's HTC Desire Lifestyle?

The oneplus is a range I would be looking at it...it's what the Nexus phones used to stand for affordable good high end phones

I jumped from an iphone to android a few years ago and have never regretted it.
I am currently using the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Great phone with an excellent camera.
It has been out for a year now so should be some decent deals kicking around.

I recently bought my wife a Huawei partly on the recommendation of a car phone warehouse salesman and she is very happy with it. About half the price of a Samsung of similar spec.

Thanks all. Some handsets to consider. A trip to an actual shop is definitely in order. SHAMZ84 I've had my eye on one plus handsets - had not heard of them until I saw your sig a while back. HMD, the company that are making the new Nokia range cannot keep up with the global demand so the UK release scheduled for May then June has been pushed even further back with no new date on the horizon.

Well compare it to a iPhone 7 or Nexus pixel it's more or less half the price. So more affordable for high end specs

Perhaps just under the premium umbrella, maybe worth looking at the Google Pixel phone. A number of advantages with this.

1. No bloatware ie the stuff samsung, LG, HTC and sony stick on their phones, its just pure Android at its best.

2. Latest updates straight to the phone, similar to iOS. where as the above mentioned need to wait a little longer.

It might be worth checking out refurb phones, or Cash Converters for the price of your budget.

I have a Google Nexus 6, out of contract and will probably keep it until it falls flat on its face and dies. 6" phone never looked back.

I use an iPhone as my main phone, but my business phone is a BlackBerry Priv. The BB Priv can be got now for ?200-?250 as they have the new one out, I purchased it because security is a big thing for me and it's the most secure affordable Android phone out, it has some very good specs and it also has a slide out keyboard which is double as a trackpad when online.

More affordable than iphone 7 or the Pixel, but affordable, no.
And they're no longer the reincarnation of the Nexus line, which saddens me.
I had one of the first oneplus ones when they first came out. A spectacularly good phone.
But that sure as heck wasn't ?450.
I really hope that google brings back the Nexus line. My Nexus 4 is one of the best phones I ever had and in terms of value for money was truly exceptional.

I was forced into buying a phone earlier than planned (today, in fact) after my iPhone went for a swim last night whilst I was bathing my daughter [emoji33]

I opted for the Sony Xperia XZ after using one for a few hours at the weekend and having now used it for 12 hours am wondering why I didn't make the switch to Android some years ago!

It's more than I wanted to spend on a handset but so far so good and I am truly reformed.
