Do you Shave like your Grampa?

I switched to the old school of shaving just over a year ago and wouldn't go back. First effort was patchy and got a few cuts of course but love the whole ceremony involved with it.

Now you have had your first shave with your new gear. Some simple tips to keep the brush in pristine condition and to stop it getting smelly.

After a shave give your brush a good rinse under cold water and flick off the excess. Gently brush your brush against a dry towel rotating whilst you do so. Once you are satisfied its nice and dry, don't put it in a cupboard, but perhaps on the window sill or shelf. Leave it there for a good couple of hours, check it to make sure the most centre part of the brush is dry and its good to go back in the cupboard or where ever else you store it. Follow those simple tips and previous one regarding steeping the brush in tepid water and it should last you many years to come.

Well I bit the bullet! First results aren't too bad although not as close as a shave with my Gillette proglide. Just need a styptic pencil, although after the first 2 attempts it's not as bad as I was fearing. Just bought a cheap brush for now off ebay but will upgrade if I get on with DE shaving.

The biggest part of it for me was finding the right blade, which is where samplers come in.

Some recommended blades were leaving my skin sore, once you find the right blade you'll just know and shaving becomes a lot easier.

I agree with Budgie the blade you use is more important than the razor. I think I tried at least 8 different makes before I found one that felt right, in my case Persona in the blue pack. Look at https://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...mple-Pack.html.

They normally have a good selection, you might also want to add a couple of additional single packs as well.

In addition if you decide to stick with it invest in a good silver tipped badger brush. A good brush and lather improves the result greatly

On special occasions I do the three pass method.

1: With grain, 2: Across grain, 3: Against grain..... Proper lubrication is key to not getting a rash, but when done properly I think it gives one of the closest shaves imaginable.

Excellent fella's. Its good to try something different. I would say stick with it and the technique will gradually come.

I struggled with a 3 pass shave, my face ended up in some state. Eventually after purchasing a Single Edge Razor did I finally click, that I can't do the three pass shave. A two pass is more appropriate for me and I have again eventually found a perfect match for each razor that I use. Feather Professional Pro for the single edge, Feather Professional for the Double Edge R41, and Persona Blue for the R89.

Already the comments in relation to the lather and soap are critical points to having a good shave, which will also take a good couple of attempts to master.

After the shave don't rub your face with a towel, gently pat it. The Alum Block is a good indicator of where you need to be more careful as are the weepers. A good moisturiser to finish will do the trick for you, and I would recommend not using after shave, after a shave.

[MENTION=68]arnage[/MENTION] Nice one mate. In order to get the most from your soap. Add some lukewarm water to it until it covers the soap. Using lukewarm water soak your brush. Jump in for your shower and when you come out flick off the excess water from the brush, empty the water from the soap dish and whip up into a lather. Paint the lather on to your face in the opposite direction of your growth. The using small gentle strokes shave away!

I could never warm up to MWF, even though some people swear by it... I definitely wouldn't recommend it if you're starting out, though! It's very slick, but the lather lacks protection, IMO, which is very needed when you're still getting the hang of the razor. If you can manage it, get some Proraso cream or soap, they're pretty cheap and much easier to lather.

Well first shave completed this morning. I already know that I'm going to enjoy process of shaving this way.

No cuts, but suspect it will take me a few goes to hone my technique a little bit to get a decent close shave across all of my face and work out which blades suit me.
