  • Do you Shave like your Grampa?

A couple of years ago I got a bit fed up with Gillette 'The best a man can get' razors and squirty shaving foam from a can, let alone the razor burn and spots.

I remember my uncle having an old spice shaving bowl, brush and DE razor. I didn't realise you could still get them. So I started out on a quest and found that you can still shave they way your Grampa did or your uncle for that matter.

So now I use a proper shaving brush, and soap or shaving cream and DE or SE Razor. Two passes every two days is ample to keep the shadow at bay and I very rarely go against the grain. Alum block and some moisturiser to finish and the that's me done. No more razor burn or spot, yes I still get little nicks now and again but what a difference it made to my grooming routine.

I've always used a brush, shaving cream and an old fashioned DE safety razor. Although if I have to be up and out early I do use a modern multi blade one.

I switched to a DE razor after winning a starter kit in a competition on here.

I have a couple of chrome merkur razors, but they are looking a bit tarnished any ideas on how to get them sparkling again?

I do not "shave" per se - I'm too lazy so I just use an electric shaver to trim a couple of times a week.

I do love going to the Turkish barbers down the road for a proper wet shave every now and again as a treat!

I trim once every few weeks (usually when my girlfriend tells me that I start looking like a bum).

And no one likes a hairy bum

A few years ago I switched to a Wilkinson Sword Xtreme3 and it vastly improved my shaving, I'd love to go DE, but time is always a factor in the mornings. Is it much more of a faff?

Not really. The only thing is being careful until you get used to it. I can normally get a shave done in about 5mins or so. If I am using my Muhle R41 I need to take my time due to the aggressive nature of the blade. In saying that if I use the R89 head I can get it done real quick with no weepers.

If the weepers do appear a quick swipe with the alum block sorts that and I can continue with the day. One thing I don't do is rub my face with a towel after a shave or use aftershave. Moisturiser is enough.

I've used a shaving brush, creams, soaps and a shaving razor or straight razor for years now, never going back to crappy expensive cartridges. The problem really ends up being too many soaps and creams, as there are some excellent artisanal products out there, and there really aren't enough shaves in a day to use everything up!

Taylors have a very strong and good reputation for mens grooming. My first soap was Taylors Peppermint. Since then I have tried a few, including Fitjar Islands (well expensive but very good), Executive Shaving, Mitchells Wool Fat (favourite), and will be looking to try La Savonniere du Moulin Donkey Milk Shaving Soap in the not too distant future.

Some may find it a task they can do without, to be honest I rather enjoy the preparation and process and the finish. A bit like lighting up a cigar.
