• What can I do

In my eternal quest to stock the humidor, I've been put in contact with a friend of a friend who is willing to let 5 Montecristo no1 go for ?50 delivered. Does this sound to be to good a deal?
What info should I ask for to prove the providence of them? I have been sent a pic of the cigars in a humidor so I'm assuming he doesn't have the original box.
Help is required before I buy some old fakes that taste like dirt

Pictures a bit grainy so there looks to be colour differences on each band... which is an alarm bell.

The print isn't central on each band. The white logo and band pattern is in a different spot on each band, nearly off the edge on others..... which is another alarm bell.

And its cheaper in sterling than euros... which is another alarm bell.

Ask yourself, how good a friend... probably not seeking to do you over, just likely doesn't know what's what. The old adage of if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it probably is a duck ...is likely to be true here. You have doubts... i'd listen to them. A bargain from a stranger who owes you nothing is hard to buy.

Right then, So I think we can safely say they are fakes. But how much different will they smoke? As a complete novice would I notice the difference between a real and a fake MC?
I'm getting killed financially buying cigars at full retail price. Just wishing the next couple of weeks would pass and would allow me to have PM's back

Rather than offer a derisory offer, I'll leave it.

The issue with fakes AFAIK is that they *might* smoke fine and they *might* be a bunch of actual Montecristos that someone has smuggled out of the factory, but most probably they're rolled using offcuts & floor sweepings and could very well contain hair, dust, plastic and other debris.

As my learned friend Emaresee points out, there's so much going on with the bands that for the saving of a few quid, which could actually turn out to be a loss of ?50, these are best avoided.

Horsebox makes a valid point. I've seen fakes which have all sort of nasty crap in. It's not worth the risk.

The tenner PeeJay suggested wouldnt be derisory for what they are likely to be...

If the seller knows them to be moody sticks, then they are being a touch naughty trying to hoodwink you. If they got sold the 'family member who worked in the factory'... Or stitched up on the beach etc the they might actually believe them to be legit and they are just trading smart.

i was diddled years ago in Jamaica on some cohibas. They were not cohibas as we know them. They were triple capped, uniform shade, and in the main smoked well. But some were plugged to high heaven and others were over squidgy and tunnelled. I used them as balast in what was my NC humi, which i now use for custom rolls, and I palmed them out to folks wanting a cigar when tanked up. They tasted distinctly cuban, the majority burned well, they were long filler albeit the odd one appeared to have bits of short to pad them out a bit.the wrapp They were just fine..... But i had paid proper money, which stungll

On top of the comments about the bands, I would have posed them all level & with the bands all central, any differences would have been obvious but if there the real McCoy...; I am not very happy they are the right shape for No1's? Might be the poor & tiny photo but appears to be a bit shorter & a bit fatter than they should be???
No1's are not expensive as Havana's go, suggest buying 3-4 real ones with your ?50, than risk it with 5 fakes.

Many thanks for all the advice. I think I'll pass on these. As I said its a friend of a friend. So no harm done.
So glad that as a newbie people can come on here and ask what to them is a serious question but to the real experienced on here is a run of the mill question, but you all still offer good sound advice.

Many thanks
